Epworth had already worked with Adele, but this recording unveiled a new side of the singer. \u201cShe has an old soul,\u201d the producer told Hollywood.com. \u201cShe never really mentioned she could sing the [Shirley] Bassey-esque slurs that she does in the opening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eventually, Epworth, who has worked with Paul McCartney, U2, Rihanna, Florence + the Machine, Coldplay, and more throughout his career, had the music and called in Adele<\/a> to help with the lyrics. \u201cI thought, \u2018This could be the song,\u2019\u201d said Epworth. \u201cAnd I rang [Adele] up and said, \u2018It might be too dark.\u2019 And she said she loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n At the time, Adele was riding high off the release of her 2011 album, 21, which became the biggest-selling album<\/a> of the 21st century. Once they were in the studio, Adele wrote the first draft of lyrics to the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall within 10 minutes and laid down vocals. <\/p>\n \u201cWithin 10 minutes, she put down most of the vocals,\u201d said Epworth. \u201cShe had the lyrics ready in her head when she drove over. It was the most absurd thing. She\u2019s fast, but it was really quite phenomenal.\u201d <\/p>\n Before Bond, Adele had a history of writing another song within minutes. Frustrated with wanting to leave her hometown of West Norwood in England to stay in London for school, Adele wrote \u201cHometown Glory\u201d in 10 minutes, following an argument with her mother. The song, featured on her 2008 debut album\u00a019, also became Adele\u2019s first single in 2007.<\/p>\n Then, at 23, Adele had her first Bond theme song, also written within a similar timespan.<\/p>\n \u201cFrom the opening bars, I knew immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n The lyrics captured Bond\u2019s downfall and themes of death and resurrection in the film.<\/p>\n This is the end Let the sky fall Upon hearing the song for the first time, actor Daniel Craig cried. \u201cFrom the opening bars, I knew immediately,\u201d said Craig<\/a>. \u201cThen the voice kicked in, and it was exactly what I\u2019d wanted from the beginning.
