{"id":605938,"date":"2026-04-25T16:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T16:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/605938\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T16:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T16:53:11","slug":"gut-bacteria-could-be-a-hidden-trigger-for-neurodegenerative-diseases-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/605938\/","title":{"rendered":"Gut Bacteria Could Be a Hidden Trigger For Neurodegenerative Diseases : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bacterial sugars in the gut could be a hidden contributor to two of the most serious neurodegenerative diseases that afflict the brain, new research suggests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/air-pollution-linked-to-higher-als-risk-and-faster-decline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<\/a> (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are closely linked conditions that sometimes overlap, and both involve the death of neurons.<\/p>\n<p>This affects muscle movement in ALS (which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-key-progression-of-motor-neurone-disease-has-been-reversed-in-the-lab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eventually fatal<\/a>), and leads to major changes in behavior and language in FTD, which can also sometimes affect movement.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still not clear how either disease gets started, and here a team led by researchers from Case Western Reserve University in the US wanted to see if gut bacteria might play a role, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12883-022-02586-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous findings<\/a> that suggested a link with ALS.<\/p>\n<p>Using a mouse model, the research turned up a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/23509-glycogen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">type of glycogen<\/a> produced by gut bacteria. It seems this sugar triggers brain inflammation and neuron death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that harmful gut bacteria produce inflammatory forms of glycogen \u2013 a type of sugar \u2013 and that these bacterial sugars trigger immune responses that damage the brain,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/news\/new-gut-brain-discovery-offers-hope-treating-als-and-dementia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Aaron Burberry, an assistant professor of pathology at Case Western Reserve University.<\/p>\n<p>Now we know that, we can start working on developing treatments to target it.<\/p>\n<p>Both ALS and FTD can be caused by a particular variation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-amyotrophic-lateral-sclerosis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the C9ORF72 gene<\/a>, but not everyone who has this variation develops the diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The main impetus behind the research was to figure out what other triggers may be contributing among those with the gene variant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GutStudy.jpg\" alt=\"Gut study\" width=\"642\" height=\"586\" class=\"wp-image-198761 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The researchers linked inflammatory glycogen to ALS and FTD. (McCourt et al., Cell Rep., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The researchers were methodical in their approach. They engineered mice without the C9ORF72 gene to mimic the variant in people, then tested a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gut-bacteria-may-directly-enter-the-brain-study-in-mice-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gut bacteria mixes<\/a> in the mice to see how their immune systems would react.<\/p>\n<p>That led the team to glycogen production, and from there to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parabacteroides_merdae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parabacteroides merdae<\/a> bacteria, one of the strains that creates it. When this bacteria was introduced to mice bred with no gut bacteria, it caused serious inflammation and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/erythritol-sweetener-blood-brain-barrier-study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breakdown of the blood-brain barrier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Further tests on human stool samples showed higher than normal levels of inflammatory glycogen in 15 out of 22 ALS patients and a single FTD patient, but in only four out of 12 healthy controls.<\/p>\n<p>The thinking is that when the body detects the potentially dangerous sugar, the immune system kicks into overdrive, which then starts to affect the brain. Importantly, the protein encoded by C9ORF72 seems to act as a brake on glycogen \u2013 which is where the problem with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-gene-inherited-from-another-type-of-human-could-still-affect-our-mental-health-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the gene variation<\/a> comes in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our demonstration that microbes that accumulate inflammatory forms of glycogen are enriched in the gut of ALS patients suggests that microbial glycogen may be an important example among many environmental and lifestyle factors that interact with predisposing genotypes to contribute risk of ALS onset and progression,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.celrep.2025.116906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the most positive results from the research is that when affected mice were given an enzyme called alpha-amylase \u2013 which breaks down glycogen \u2013 inflammation levels were reduced and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/blood-of-exceptionally-long-lived-people-reveals-crucial-differences\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lifespans were extended<\/a>.
