on its soil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mexico&#8217;s government said on Saturday that two individuals from the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-states-of-america\/t-19065189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> who were operating in its territory as intelligence agents\u00a0were not authorized to carry out their activities.<\/p>\n<p>The two men were killed last weekend in connection with a drug raid and they are believed to have been members of the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/central-intelligence-agency-cia\/t-19246928\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)<\/a>, according to reports in US media.<\/p>\n<p>Two Mexican officials also died in the incident in the northern state of Chihuahua on April 19, which featured a multiple vehicle convoy carrying soldiers and members of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Chihuahua&#8217;s state prosecutor said the group were on their way back from a raid of clandestine drug labs when their car skidded off the road and into a ravine.<\/p>\n<p>The US agents who were killed were &#8220;instructor officers&#8221; who &#8220;were carrying out training tasks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cooperation between US law enforcement and Mexican security forces within <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/mexico\/t-18214018\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a> is historically rare and a politically sensitive topic in the country.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"76841487\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/76841487_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is under pressure from Washington to crack down on drug cartels [FILE: April 18]Image: Nacho Doce\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>US citizens entered as\u00a0tourist and\u00a0diplomat \u2014 ministry<\/p>\n<p>The incident could create fresh diplomatic friction between the the two neighboring nations, as Mexican President <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/mexico-elects-claudia-sheinbaum-as-first-female-president\/a-69241858\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a> already faces pressure to manage a delicate relationship with the US amid\u00a0President Donald Trump&#8217;s <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/mexican-president-says-she-turned-down-trump-troops-offer\/a-72428187\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">demands that Mexico act more aggressively<\/a> towards <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/mexican-army-kills-drug-lord-oseguera-el-mencho\/a-76080378\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drug cartels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s Security Ministry said in a statement that immigration records showed one of the two agents entered the country as a &#8220;visitor&#8221; while the other used a &#8220;diplomatic passport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said Mexican law forbids foreign agents from participating in operations on Mexico&#8217;s soil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Neither had formal accreditation to participate in operational activities within national territory,&#8221;
