In anticipation of the space agency\u2019s eventual establishment of a permanent presence on the Moon, scientists at NASA revealed plans to test the flammability of materials on the lunar surface, as detailed in a <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/lpsc2026\/pdf\/1799.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:document;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">document<\/a> presented at a <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/lpsc2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:recent planetary science conference;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">recent planetary science conference<\/a> that was <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.universetoday.com\/articles\/the-moon-might-be-more-prone-to-fires\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:spotted by Universe Today;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">spotted by Universe Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As part of an experiment appropriately dubbed Flammability of Materials on the Moon (FM2), the researchers are looking to challenge a standardized test, <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/standards.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/standards\/NASA\/B-w\/CHANGE-2\/2\/Historical\/nasa-std-6001b.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:known as NASA-STD-6001B;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">known as NASA-STD-6001B<\/a>, which involves holding a six-inch flame to a material to evaluate its safety. If it burns more than six inches up or drips burning debris, it fails the test. The standard is required for the \u201cevaluation, testing, and selection of materials that are intended for use in space vehicles and associated Ground Support Equipment,\u201d according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But there\u2019s one glaring problem, as the scientists point out in their latest mission outline: the test is \u201cconducted in normal Earth gravity, with the assumption that if a material passes the 1G test, then it is considered safe for spaceflight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, the partial gravity on the lunar surface could throw our understanding of fire for a loop once again \u2014 a crucial question scientists are racing to understand, as an open fire inside a lunar habitat, <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/space-exploration\/apollo-1-tragedy-the-fatal-fire-and-its-aftermath\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:let alone the tight confines of a spacecraft;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">let alone the tight confines of a spacecraft<\/a>, could easily <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/microdevices.jpl.nasa.gov\/capabilities\/in-situ-instruments-tls\/spacecraft-fire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:prove disastrous;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">prove disastrous<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The scientists suggest that a \u201cmaterial that is marginally non-flammable on Earth\u201d may be \u201cflammable at a lower gravity level.\u201d That\u2019s because a natural phenomenon called blowoff, which is caused by the circular reintroduction of fresh oxygen to sustain the flame sputtering out on Earth, may slow down in partial gravity. In other words, the chemical reactions of the flame may be able to \u201ckeep up\u201d in a lunar environment, making a material more flammable there than it is on Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Previous research involving drop towers \u2014 essentially letting payloads go from a tower to simulate the effects of weightlessness \u2014 and sounding rockets, which are suborbital research vehicles that carry scientific instruments high into the atmosphere, have shown that some partial gravity environments are \u201cexpected to increase the flammability limits for some materials,\u201d the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s not to mention the oxygen-enriched environments future space explorers on the Moon or Mars may live in, a mix that may help astronauts to breathe, but could help feed fires as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To study the phenomenon first-hand \u2014 and over a longer period than during a drop tower or sounding rocket test \u2014 the researcher propose burning four sold fuel samples inside small, habitable atmospheres on the Moon, with a \u201cplanned launch date of late 2026.\u201d Cameras, radiometers, and an oxygen sensor will measure how the fire behaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe tests will provide benchmark data and are part of the larger effort to understand how lunar gravity will affect material flammability,\u201d the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Until we have the chance to establish an extensive presence on the Moon, the scientists argue that a \u201climited series of tests would enable a comparison between fires on the Moon and Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The results of the experiment could prove critical for the safety of future space explorers, who may not have the option to evacuate their lunar habitat shelter Moon in case of a fire.
