One wonders if Fleetwood Mac<\/a>\u2019s Rumours would be as iconic if it weren\u2019t for the drama that surrounds it. <\/p>\n It\u2019s not just that the album chronicles two breakups, imbuing it with the ever-addictive and endlessly relatable universal subject matter of heartache, but specifically, those two breakups were happening within the band itself, meaning that these songs, in both their lyrics and instrumentals, were the heartache being worked out in real time and in the open for listeners to gawk at.\u00a0<\/p>\n Obviously, people are nosey. As soon as the press got wind of that story, it was everywhere. The public naturally wanted to know everything, and even decades on, music fans eat up any little bit of information or any new little insight into the connection between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham<\/a>, and the way it all went down in the studio.\u00a0<\/p>\n Part of it is natural human fascination, but part of it is also obviously complete bafflement. The average person needs at least a few weeks of bed rotting after a major heartbreak, so how on earth were they even in the studio? Let alone in the studio with the cause of the pain, looking them in the eye as they sang about exactly that.\u00a0<\/p>\n How on earth did Nicks stand there, aching from the loss of her long-term love, and sing \u2018Go Your Own Way\u2019,<\/a> having to put her voice to a pretty brutal tune about just how done Buckingham was. It\u2019s savage, and it\u2019s staggering; personally, I would have just been in a corner crying.\u00a0<\/p>\n I\u2019m sure there was some of that in their room at the Record Plant, where the album was majority recorded. But as the band resolved to work through it and get what would become their masterpiece down on tape, a plan had to be hatched. The damage was already done, but they needed to find some ways of managing it, so it was decided that if they were going to have to all come face-to-face in the studio and hash it all out there, they needed to stay as far away as possible the rest of the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n Typically, back when studios and recording were more affordable, a band would pile into a home and all write together, keeping things immersive and intensive, but when the making of Rumours was already volatile, Fleetwood Mac had to do the opposite, so the band split in two across a whole city.\u00a0<\/p>\n The boys of the band took the studio\u2019s lodgings; the Sausalito Record Plant, where they set up shop, had a guest house attached. That\u2019s usually where a whole band would stay, but instead, it was just Buckingham, McVie and Fleetwood staying there, having their guy time. Putting a good amount of distance between them, Nicks and Christine McVie decided to move into two condos in the same building over by the city\u2019s harbour, meaning that the girls could head home after a heavy day and debrief together, leading to them quickly bonding and becoming the life-long best friends they were.\u00a0<\/p>\n The rule was simple: they\u2019d meet in the studio, then outside of it, no one crossed into the other\u2019s part of town, and there would be no contact between them. Keeping the arguments caged in the creative space<\/a>, it channelled all the tension into the record, and kept them safe from it, as much as possible, in their downtime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
