No matter what your day looked like, all of these activities have one thing in common: they require strong, capable knees.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/morning-exercises-restore-knee-strength-after-60\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knee strength<\/a> is something that can easily be taken for granted. You may assume it\u2019s mostly important for athletes who run, jump, and play vigorous sports, but that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. As you age, building and maintaining knee strength is essential, considering you naturally lose lean muscle.\u00a0This process, known as sarcopenia, starts when you hit 30, and\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/bed-exercises-reverse-muscle-loss-after-60\/\" target=\"_blank\">muscle declines<\/a> more quickly after 60.\u00a0Strong knees play a major role in helping you remain independent\u2014and it\u2019s not just for the fun stuff. Simple things like getting in and out of a chair can become challenging without them.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering what to do about it, we chatted with <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustindebroy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Dustin DebRoy<\/a>, Manager, Chiropractic Education and Relations at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Joint Chiropractic<\/a>, who\u2019s here to help. Dr. DebRoy shares five <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/morning-exercises-restore-leg-muscle-after-60\/\" target=\"_blank\">morning exercises<\/a> that build knee strength faster than <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/resistance-band-exercises-to-do-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">resistance bands<\/a> after 55.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong-term knee strength and stability depend on consistent and effective training across the full range of motion,\u201d Dr. DebRoy explains. \u201cWhile resistance bands can support consistency, they are not the most effective tool for building long-term strength. If a person cannot adequately load the entire range of motion, it can lead to strength imbalances, reduced stability, and an increased risk of injury during everyday activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where these exercises come in clutch.<\/p>\n<p>\tSquats<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSquats strengthen the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings together, which improves overall knee stability and load tolerance. This helps the knee handle everyday tasks like sitting, standing, and lifting with better control. They are more effective than resistance band exercises because they load the entire body against gravity, which better trains real-world force and joint stability,\u201d Dr. DebRoy tells us.<\/p>\n<p>Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart on the floor.<br \/>\nExtend your arms ahead of you or place your hands on your hips.<br \/>\nBend at the knees and hips as you lower into a squat.<br \/>\nDescend until your thighs are parallel to the floor.<br \/>\nPress through your heels to rise back up to standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__related-link\"><a class=\"related-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/knee-exercises-after-55-rebuild-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 4 Daily Exercises That Rebuild Knee Strength Faster Than Resistance Bands After 55<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tLunges<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLunges build single-leg strength and control, which trains the knee to stay stable when body weight shifts from side to side. This directly carries over to walking, stairs, and changes in direction. They outperform banded exercises because they challenge balance, coordination, and full-body control under real load,\u201d Dr. DebRoy says.<\/p>\n<p>Stand tall, perpendicular to the back of a sturdy chair with your feet parallel and hip-width apart.<br \/>\nStep one foot forward, using the chair for support.<br \/>\nEngage your core as you bend your knees, lowering to form 90-degree bends in both legs.<br \/>\nKeep your upper body straight.<br \/>\nPress through your front heel and the ball of your back foot to rise back up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__related-link\"><a class=\"related-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/6-standing-drills-stronger-knees-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 6 Standing Drills That Keep Your Knees Stronger Than Most People Your Age After 50<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tJump Squats<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJump squats develop explosive leg power while training the knees to absorb impact safely,\u201d Dr. DebRoy explains. \u201cThis improves the knee\u2019s ability to handle quick movements and repetitive loading like running or jumping. It is more effective than band work because it maintains continuous tension through a longer range of motion and requires full hip and core stabilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lie flat on your back with your arms at your sides and heels placed on sliders.<br \/>\nBend your knees and bring your feet close to your hips.<br \/>\nPress your lower back into the mat and engage your core.<br \/>\nLift your hips to form a bridge position.<br \/>\nRemain in the bridge position as you gradually slide your heels away from your body.<br \/>\nHold for a moment once your legs are extended.<br \/>\nReverse the motion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__related-link\"><a class=\"related-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/elite-lower-body-strength-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\">If You Can Do These 8 Lower-Body Moves, Your Leg Strength Is Elite<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tCyclist Squats<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCyclist squats place more demand on the quadriceps, which are key muscles for knee extension strength. This improves the knee\u2019s ability to tolerate forward-loaded positions like squatting and climbing stairs.
