The future of LIV Golf is very much up in the air.<\/a> CEO Scott O\u2019Neil alluded during the league\u2019s broadcast from Mexico City that although the league is fully funded through 2026, there\u2019s major uncertainty surrounding the outlook<\/a> beyond that.<\/p>\n

That came after reports circulated that the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the league\u2019s major financial backer, was preparing to pull its funding as it reshifts the priorities amid the conflict in Iran.<\/p>\n

Former ESPN personality Trey Wingo attempted to read between the lines and draw conclusions about LIV\u2019s future from its stars\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cLIV is essentially dead, it\u2019s easy to see,\u201d Wingo said in a recent video. \u201cPhil Mickelson has yet to play in a LIV event this year, and he says it\u2019s from, you know, he\u2019s dealing with a personal health issue with someone in his family. And I\u2019m sure that might be true, but he hasn\u2019t played in a single event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that he hasn\u2019t played in a single event probably should have told us something, right? I mean, no one was a bigger champion of LIV than Phil Mickelson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trey Wingo is selling a new conspiracy theory that posits \u201cLIV Golf is essentially dead\u201d based on the collective actions of 4 of its stars. (One claims is false. While the others are kernels of truth. #LIVGolf<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/OwC0YxFp20<\/a><\/p>\n

Wingo also made note of Bryson DeChambeau being \u201cvery emotional\u201d after winning a Tour event in South Africa, speculating that \u201che might have been thinking, \u2018this might be my last LIV event ever.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when you go back and look [at their actions] through a different lens, it\u2019s kind of easier to see, isn\u2019t it?\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

In reality, Mickelson has been dealing with a personal health matter<\/a> that forced him to pull out of the Masters as well, and DeChambeau has been dealing with his own things outside of golf<\/a>.<\/p>\n

LIV golfer Ian Poulter, knowing the truth about what Mickelson and DeChambeau were dealing with, called the sportscaster out on X, and Wingo took accountability.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time\u00a0Wingo has\u00a0speculated that LIV will end<\/a>, and while that may still be the case, theories about its future based on players\u2019 personal circumstances aren\u2019t a responsible way to report on the story. Wingo fell short of this one, but taking responsibility is a start.<\/p>\n
