And loyalty program members of Oneworld\u2019s other airlines can now earn and spend points and use elite status benefits on Hawaiian Airlines flights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Alaska noted that Hawaiian this week\u00a0also converted its passenger service system to Sabre, the same one Alaska Airlines uses. The change will provide customers of both airlines with \u201ca more seamless and consistent travel experience from booking to boarding across a growing global network,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.alaskaair.com\/company\/alaska-airlines-hawaiian-airlines-transition-to-shared-passenger-service-system-to-deliver-a-more-seamless-guest-experience\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska said<\/a>, noting that the Sabre technology \u201cconnects the digital tools and programs used by guests and employees; from\u00a0websites, mobile app, Atmos Rewards and Huakai by Hawaiian loyalty programs, to airport kiosks and reservation records.\u201d Meanwhile, the \u201cHA\u201d airline code on all Hawaiian flight numbers has now been replaced with Alaska\u2019s \u201cAS\u201d code, <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/hawaiian-airlines-retires-ha-flight-code\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Simple Flying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"FILE: The tail of a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in January 2021.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FILE: The tail of a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in January 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Wilfredo Lee\/AP<\/p>\n<p>Last week, we noted that low-cost Spirit Airlines, in its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding in less than a year, was said to be on the verge of liquidation as soaring jet fuel prices caused by the Iran war blew a hole in its financial recovery program. But now the troubled airline is counting on relief from a source other than traditional lenders: the federal government. And at week\u2019s end, it appeared to be on the verge of getting it as feverish talks in Washington sought to hammer out a rescue deal. According to a report <a href=\"https:\/\/theaircurrent.com\/airlines\/spirit-duffy-bailout-dot-fuel\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first published in the Air Current<\/a>, an aviation journal, Spirit asked the Trump administration for \u201chundreds of millions of dollars in emergency funding\u201d to help pay its fuel bills and keep it out of imminent liquidation. The publication said its information came from \u201csources familiar with the discussions.\u201d President Donald Trump said during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/21\/trump-spirit-airlines.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an interview on\u00a0CNBC<\/a> this week that a federal bailout was not out of the question: \u201cSpirit\u2019s in trouble. \u2026 Maybe the federal government should help that one out.\u201d But he also suggested that another carrier might be Spirit\u2019s salvation: \u201cI don\u2019t mind mergers. I think I\u2019d love somebody to buy Spirit, as an example.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"President Donald Trump waves as he boards Air Force One, Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach, Fla.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump waves as he boards Air Force One, Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Schiefelbein\/AP<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-20\/spirit-floats-us-government-stake-to-avoid-potential-liquidation?srnd=homepage-americas&amp;sref=xy487A2X&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg News reported<\/a> that Spirit was willing to offer the government an equity stake in the company in exchange for a bailout that could keep it in business, and both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/22\/spirit-airlines-rescue-trump-administration.html?__source=iosappshare%7Ccom.apple.UIKit.activity.Mail\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">CNBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/airlines\/trump-administration-nearing-rescue-deal-for-spirit-airlines-2f6a5556\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> said that Spirit and the White House were in advanced talks on a financing package that could loan Spirit up to $500 million in exchange for warrants giving the government up to a 90% stake in the carrier. As One Mile at a Time\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/spirit-airlines-trump-emergency-bailout-avoid-liquidation\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Schlappig wrote this week<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be unsympathetic, but I don\u2019t think taxpayer money should go toward keeping one struggling airline alive, essentially just subsidizing airfare for a matter of months. For that matter, the government taking a stake in individual airlines just seems like a bad idea for competition.\u201d View From the Wing\u2019s Gary\u00a0Leff also <a href=\"https:\/\/viewfromthewing.com\/spirit-wants-taxpayers-to-own-part-of-the-airline-in-exchange-for-a-bailout\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave the idea a thumbs-down<\/a>. \u201cThere is absolutely no legal authority for the administration to take an ownership stake in Spirit Airlines as a form of bailout,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe government has bailed out airlines before. Reuters said this week that JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty declared in a memo to employees that the company is not considering a bankruptcy filing \u2014 not in the current fiscal year, at least. \u201cWe\u2019re operating in an environment that is more challenging than we had expected at the beginning of the year particularly as it relates to fuel prices,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/jetblue-ceo-says-airline-isnt-considering-filing-bankruptcy-bloomberg-news-2026-04-20\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she said in the memo<\/a>, but the airline <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/jetblue-secures-debt-financing-over-20-airbus-a320-a220-aircraft\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently secured $500 million<\/a> in additional financing by putting up 22 of its aircraft as collateral and has an option to get $250 million more by the same method. Simple Flying\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/jetblue-not-considering-bankruptcy\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Mitchell said<\/a> Geraghty\u2019s statement \u201cis designed to improve employee and investor confidence more than it actually changes anything fundamental. JetBlue still has to prove that it can turn that liquidity runway into sustainable profits, so the outlook shifts from acute distress to pressured but still manageable recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>After widespread media reports last week that United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby floated the possibility of a merger with American Airlines during a White House meeting in February, American finally responded to the rumors by shooting them down. \u201cAmerican Airlines is not engaged with or interested in any discussions regarding a merger with United Airlines,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.aa.com\/news\/news-details\/2026\/Statement-from-American-Airlines-CORP-OTH-04\/default.aspx\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the company wrote in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWhile changes in the broader airline marketplace may be necessary, a combination with United would be negative for competition and for consumers, and therefore inconsistent with our understanding of the Administration\u2019s philosophy toward the industry and principles of antitrust law. Our focus will remain on executing on our strategic objectives and positioning American to win for the long term.\u201d United has also been suggested as a possible merger partner for JetBlue, where financial difficulties in recent months have been exacerbated by skyrocketing jet fuel prices created by the Iran war. It\u2019s just as well American rebuffed a United deal. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/trump-united-american-airlines-i-dont-like-having-them-merge-2026-04-21\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a Reuters report<\/a>, Trump said this week that while in general \u201cI don\u2019t mind mergers,\u201d he didn\u2019t like the idea of two large, strong carriers combining. \u201cAmerican it\u2019s doing fine, and United is doing very well. I know the United people, they\u2019re doing very well. I don\u2019t like having them merge,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of mergers, low-cost Allegiant\u2019s proposed acquisition of Sun Country Airlines got a boost as the Transportation Department granted an interim exemption \u201cthat will allow both airlines to continue operating as separate carriers under common ownership after closing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.allegiantair.com\/press-releases\/press-release-details\/2026\/Allegiant-and-Sun-Country-Achieve-Key-Regulatory-Milestone-with-DOT-Approval\/default.aspx\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Allegiant said in news release<\/a>. Since it was announced in January, the deal was considered unlikely to draw opposition from the Justice Department on antitrust grounds since the two airlines\u2019 route systems have virtually no overlap. Allegiant said the DOT\u2019s granting of its exemption request \u201csatisfies the last remaining regulatory approval-related condition to the closing of the proposed transaction.\u201d The acquisition is still subject to approval by the stockholders of both companies, and the airlines have scheduled special shareholder meetings for May 8. \u201cAllegiant and Sun Country now expect the closing to occur as early as May 13, 2026 following shareholder approval at the special meetings,\u201d Allegiant said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"An aerial view of the UC Merced campus.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An aerial view of the UC Merced campus.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of UC Merced<\/p>\n<p>Following its recent debut on the San Francisco-Singapore route, United Airlines\u2019 new upscale version of the 787 Dreamliner \u2014 which features what it calls \u201cthe United Elevated interior\u201d \u2014 is due to start flying its second long-haul route next week.\u00a0On April 30, the new aircraft is scheduled to go into service between SFO and London Heathrow (UA flight 901). The upgraded 787 features eight Polaris Studio Suites \u2014 \u201clie-flat, all-aisle-access seats that are 25% larger than standard United Polaris seats with privacy doors, an extra ottoman seat, exclusive entr\u00e9e options, an\u00a0Ossetra caviar amuse-bouche service, new amenity kits with elevated skincare offerings, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and a huge 27-inch, 4K OLED seatback screen \u2014 the largest among U.S. carriers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/newsroom\/announcements\/cision-125446\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United said<\/a>. It also has 56 regular lie-flat Polaris seats, 35 premium economy seats, 39 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats, and 84 regular economy seats. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>In domestic route news, the regional carrier Contour Airlines said it plans to introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/contour-airlines-announces-new-nonstop-flights-from-merced-ca-to-los-angeles-ca-and-las-vegas-nv-302748873.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new service from Merced to Los Angeles International and Las Vegas<\/a> starting July 1. The service from\u00a0Merced Yosemite Regional Airport will operate once a day to LAX and five days a week to Las Vegas, using the airline\u2019s 30-seat regional jets. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SacIntlAirport\/posts\/delta-has-made-a-seasonal-adjustment-to-its-sacramentodetroit-route-with-the-las\/987551843627053\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sacramento International Airport said this week<\/a> that Delta is making a \u201cseasonal adjustment\u201d to its Sacramento-Detroit service, suspending the route after May 31 and not resuming it until March 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Low-cost Frontier Airlines is looking to stimulate summer bookings by announcing its\u00a0GoWild Summer Pass at what it calls \u201cits lowest ever introductory price\u201d of $199.\u00a0That\u2019s good for five months of unlimited travel on Frontier, with an added incentive to buy it early: \u201cNow through May 8, all pass holders can book flights early with no blackout dates and with dedicated seats on all domestic Frontier flights through September 8,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flyfrontier.com\/frontier-releases-2026-gowild-summer-pass-at-lowest-ever-introductory-price--providing-5-months-of-unlimited-flights-for-just-199\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the airline said in a news release<\/a>. Its name is Jos\u00e9 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flysanjose.com\/news-release\/intbot\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a humanoid robot that uses interactive AI to answer travelers\u2019 questions<\/a>. Developed by a local startup company called InBot, Jos\u00e9 sits behind a desk in SJC\u2019s Terminal B near Gate 24 in a four-month pilot program.
