In Avengers: Doomsday, while Doctor Doom sets out to save the world, only to conquer it at the same time, the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have to stop him. One hero could stand a good chance in the fight, but there is one serious problem. The MCU has worked hard to weaken Hulk as the movies have gone on. This takes away one of the strongest Marvel heroes in the most important fight for the survival of the planet and freedom from Doctor Doom’s rule.

The storyline for Avengers: Doomsday follows the Marvel Comics storyline “Time Runs Out.” The Incursions are events that destroy two versions of Earth from the multiverse when they collide. In the comics, it was Earth-616 and the world of the Ultimates, Earth-1610. In the movie, it appears that the second Earth in danger here is the world from the Fox X-Men movies, bringing over the heroes from that world. However, one man will save the MCU, and that is Doctor Doom.

This will lead into Avengers: Secret Wars, where it should follow the story from the event series Secret Wars, when Doctor Doom reforms the world into his own image, making himself God Emperor Doom. The heroes have to fight to revert the Earth back to its original form, and Hulk should be a big part of that since he has been around since the MCU began. However, thanks to several changes in Hulk’s character, he isn’t anywhere near the power he should be. It also might be too late for the MCU to fix it.

The MCU’s Avengers Movie Setup Makes It Borderline Impossible To Avoid Undermining The Hulk’s Power Levels

"Mark

Mark Ruffalo as Hulk in Avengers: Endgame

When Hulk first debuted in the MCU, it was his own solo movie, co-produced by Universal Pictures. In The Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton starred as Bruce Banner, and he attempted to find a way to control the beast inside. This Hulk had a level of intelligence, but he was still prone to raging out when he grew too angry. However, by the end of the movie, Banner seemed to find a way to control the change. This led to The Avengers, where Mark Ruffalo replaced Norton, and he could now control when he changed into Hulk.

However, Marvel began to severely nerf Hulk starting with his next appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Banner could still control the change, but Hulk was starting to gain more control of his emotions. It was even shown when Black Widow could talk him down. However, this was the one movie that showed how destructive Hulk could be when he lost control, as Scarlet Witch used her powers to make him rage out, and Iron Man barely contained him. By the end, Hulk chose to leave the team.

Thor: Ragnarok showed Hulk was still powerful, as he almost beat Thor in a gladiatorial battle. However, Thor called forth his lightning powers without Mjölnir before the Grandmaster cheated to help Hulk win. Hulk could talk now, and he was also shown to be more in control of his actions, although less intelligent than he would become later. By Avengers: Infinity War, Hulk refused to fight at all since Thanos beat him so badly the last time they met, and by Avengers: Endgame, Hulk had taken on Marvel Comics’ Professor Hulk persona.

An intelligent Hulk can’t beat a fully powered Doctor Doom. In Marvel Comics, Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets. When he is out of control, he is at the height of his powers, and there is no limit to what he can do. The MCU never showed that, and while Hulk is rumored to go savage in Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer, that likely won’t stick. Hulk won’t gain his full power in time for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.

Marvel Has Shown It Can Do The Hulk’s Full Powers Justice On-Screen

"Mega-Hulk

Mega-Hulk in What If

This is disappointing, as Hulk is the most powerful Marvel Comics character in existence. However, that is also why the MCU had to weaken him in the movies. If Hulk were at full power, Thanos wouldn’t have been able to succeed in his plans. Thor was there at full power, but Thor and Hulk, at the top of their skills, could have stopped him. Making him intelligent in Avengers: Endgame also limited his ability to just smash Thanos.

However, there have been moments that showed how powerful he could be. He was extremely strong in The Incredible Hulk, and no one could stop him in that film. He was also nearly indestructible when he battled Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron, although Iron Man did get the advantage when the Scarlet Witch’s spell began to wear off. The Disney+ series What If…? gave the best example.

Hulk was a major component of the “What If… Zombies!?” episode of the series, and he was also in the Marvel Zombies spin-off series, where he turned into Infinity Hulk. This series showed how an overpowered Hulk was all that stood to stop the zombified Scarlet Witch, and he almost succeeded. Hulk also showed his full might in “What If… The Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers” in What If…? Season 3. This time around, he turned into Mega Hulk and showed how powerful he was.

The fact that it took What If…? to show Hulk at his best proves how much the MCU has lessened Hulk and his impressive power levels. With Doctor Doom making his big movie in Avengers: Doomsday, there is no way the MCU has enough time to power up Hulk enough to combat that, even with his next appearance coming in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It is too late for this version of Hulk to live up to his comic book counterpart.
