The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday<\/a> was shown at CinemaCon last week in Las Vegas, Nevada. Attendees of the event saw new looks at the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the Fox X-Men characters, along with a first true look at Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s Doctor Doom.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Doctor Doom, and the actor that plays him, that dominates most of the conversations regarding the next MCU film. The decision to cast Downey Jr. caused waves in both the MCU fandom and the broader pop culture sphere when it was announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2024, with some on board with the choice and others opposing it.<\/p>\n

Beyond the question of if Downey Jr. is the right person to play Doctor Doom, there\u2019s also intense speculation on how the Russo Brothers will bring this character into the MCU. Doom has previously appeared in the Fantastic Four films from the 2000s as well as Fant4stic in 2015, but in Doomsday, he\u2019s set to pose an even greater threat than ever before.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear exactly how comic book accurate the portrayal of Doctor Doom will be in Doomsday. The suit certainly looks like it was ripped straight from the comics, which is an area the MCU has had plenty of success in overall, but other questions regarding Doom as a character in the next Avengers film continue to pop up, especially after the latest trailer.<\/p>\n

Doctor Doom\u2019s Mask Is On The Whole Time In The Latest Trailer<\/p>\n

A lot of footage is packed into the CinemaCon trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.<\/a> As stated, Bucky Barnes and the rest of the New Avengers are seen, along with new looks at the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. It\u2019s a hefty trailer that shows a lot of brief looks at the characters, all without revealing much of the actual story.<\/p>\n

Doctor Doom was the overarching character throughout the trailer, as he spoke at the beginning of the footage and was then shown periodically throughout. However, Doom\u2019s mask remains on the entire time, meaning that Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s face wasn\u2019t shown at all. It\u2019s a bold move, especially when factoring in the cost of bringing Downey Jr. back to the MCU.<\/p>\n

Doom is shown fighting Thor in the trailer, and it makes sense that his mask would be on in this scene. However, it still brings about more questions, especially as Doom appeared in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps<\/a> meeting Franklin Richards and having his mask off (although the framing of the shot meant audiences still didn\u2019t see his face).<\/p>\n

Exactly How The MCU Will Approach Doctor Doom Remains Unclear<\/p>\n

In the comics, Doom suffers an injury so bad<\/a> that it requires him to wear the mask the entire time moving forward. His face is scarred and deformed, showing the damage that he sustained, all while making him a more menacing villain in the process. Doom wears his mask even when he has god-like powers in Secret Wars, as it not only provides him with protection, but intimidates his enemies as well.<\/p>\n

Another major point of Doctor Doom\u2019s character is his Latverian identity. Doom was born and raised in Latveria, a fictional country in Eastern Europe, and is often described in the comics as a land suffering from poverty and food and supply shortages. It\u2019s a key part of Doom\u2019s development, and one that many fans were worried would get left behind after the announcement of Downey Jr.\u2019s casting.<\/p>\n

How the MCU plans on bringing Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor Von Doom, into the universe (or, more accurately, the multiverse) remains to be seen. The trailer gives some answers to that, but also raises many more questions regarding Doom\u2019s latest adaptation into live action. That Doom has his mask on the whole time signals that Kevin Feige and co. may be planning on having Doom be as comic book accurate as possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

Doom\u2019s Comic Book Accuracy Needs To Be Balanced In The MCU’s Story<\/p>\n

The MCU has always balanced telling fresh, original stories while still remaining faithful to the Marvel characters and stories from the comics. This has never been more important than with Doctor Doom, not only because of the mounting pressure on Avengers: Doomsday<\/a> to deliver a story that reignites audience interest in the MCU, but because of the significance of the villain in the comics and, perhaps most importantly, the significance of the actor playing him.<\/p>\n

Doom has to be accurate to the comics, but the MCU also needs to ensure that they bring their own traditional storytelling twist to the character, not only to integrate him into the universe successfully but also to get the most out of the casting of Robert Downey Jr. Getting that balance right is crucial to the success of Doomsday, Secret Wars, and other projects featuring Doctor Doom.<\/p>\n

The story will also be more emotional for both the heroes and the audience if the balance is right. Downey, Jr. playing the hero of the previous saga, only to now be the villain of the next one is quite a change, and one that would undoubtedly have an impact on the Avengers and the rest of the protagonists. That switch up, from hero to villain, will also help the MCU tie Doomsday back to Avengers: Endgame, which also looks to be a main priority for the studio.<\/p>\n

Although Tom Holland’s Spider-Man wasn’t announced as part of the cast for <\/a>Avengers: Doomsday,<\/a> his character may still end up appearing. Regardless, his relationship remains a prime example of what’s possible with this comic book\/MCU balance. Few heroes were closer to Tony Stark\/Iron Man than Holland’s Spider-Man, who was discovered by Stark when he was a sophomore in high school.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man’s reaction to seeing Doctor Doom would be a way to showcase the switch up in Downey Jr.’s roles, all while making the character of Doctor Doom more intimidating as a villain in Avengers: Doomsday. The same goes for Steve Rogers, who also had a close relationship with Stark in the Infinity Saga and is one of the heroes who is confirmed to face off against Doom this December.<\/p>\n
