Pulled from the Pine Island Trough, it shows that resin-producing trees once lived close to the South Pole.<\/p>\n<p>The fragment dates back between 92 and 83 million years, during the mid-Cretaceous. It provides a direct link to a time when Antarctica supported forested landscapes very different from today. <\/p>\n<p>The sample, called Pine Island amber, was collected in 2017 during an expedition aboard the RV Polarstern. Scientists used the MARUM-MeBo70 seafloor drill to extract sediment cores from the Amundsen Sea Embayment. And as mentioned in the journal Antarctic Science, this is the first confirmed amber ever found in Antarctica, which makes the find stand out right away.<\/p>\n<p>The Southernmost Amber Ever Found<\/p>\n<p>The identification of amber in Antarctica fills a long-standing gap in the fossil record. Before this, the southernmost known deposits dated to the mid-Cretaceous in southern Australia and New Zealand. <\/p>\n<p>According to the research team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=0ilKi5UAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dr. Johann Klages<\/a> of the University of Bremen, this new find, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/antarctic-science\/article\/first-discovery-of-antarctic-amber\/700244C13B3972F0048EAC029E34263E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Antarctic Science<\/a>, confirms that suitable conditions for resin production once existed even in polar regions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Microscopic-view-of-a-tiny-Antarctic-amber-fragment-1200x678.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Microscopic View Of A Tiny Antarctic Amber Fragment\" class=\"wp-image-132006\"  \/>Microscopic view of a tiny Antarctic amber fragment. Schumacher<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2026\/04\/bizarre-arachnid-amber-shouldnt-exist\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"129264\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fossilized resin sample <\/a>came from the mid-shelf section of the trough, an area that preserves ancient sediments. Recovering it was not straightforward. Deep-sea drilling in Antarctic conditions is complex, and that adds weight to the discovery itself.<\/p>\n<p>A Hidden Ancient Forest Beneath the South Pole<\/p>\n<p>Amber forms from plant resin, typically exuded by gymnosperms. Credit: Antarctic Science<\/p>\n<p>The Antarctic specimen indicates that conifer-dominated forests once thrived in a swampy, temperate rainforest environment near the South Pole. This idea may sound surprising, but it fits with other evidence pointing to a much warmer climate during the mid-Cretaceous, when <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2024\/08\/hidden-forests-chinas-massive-sinkholes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forests <\/a>could grow even at high latitudes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Antarctic amber likely contains remains of original tree bark as micro-inclusions,\u201d as co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Henny-Gerschel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dr. Henny Gerschel<\/a>, a researcher at the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology, stated.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny Details Trapped Inside The Amber<\/p>\n<p>The piece itself contains transparent and translucent particles, which point to good preservation. Credit: Antarctic Science<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also noticed signs of pathological resin flow, a response trees use when they are damaged by <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/04\/deep-sea-footage-captures-grotesque-parasites\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"87387\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parasites <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/01\/apocalyptic-wildfires-in-los-angeles-leave-at-least-5-dead-and-thousands-forced-to-evacuate\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"75729\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildfires<\/a>. This process helps seal the bark and can trap bits of material inside the resin.<\/p>\n<p>These details matter because amber can act like a time capsule. Even a small fragment can hold clues about the environment it formed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very exciting to realize that, at some point in their history, all seven continents had climatic conditions allowing resin-producing trees to survive,\u201d Dr. Klages said. \u201cOur goal now is to learn more about the forest ecosystem \u2014 if it burned down, if we can find traces of life included in the amber.
