{"id":607964,"date":"2026-04-26T19:32:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T19:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/607964\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T19:32:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T19:32:19","slug":"ameriprise-financial-faces-advisor-attrition-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/607964\/","title":{"rendered":"Ameriprise Financial Faces Advisor Attrition Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Ameriprise Financial saw total client net asset inflows in its wealth and advice division decline year over year in 2026 and said it expects advisor attrition to continue into the second and third quarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">In first-quarter earnings released after market close Thursday, Minneapolis-based Ameriprise reported that total client net inflows in its wealth and advice division were $4.2 billion, a drop of 59% compared to the same quarter in 2025. Total client assets grew overall 12% to $1.1 trillion, and wrap assets grew by 16% to $664 billion, driven by \u201corganic growth and advisor productivity in a higher but more volatile market environment,\u201d the firm wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">In its asset management division, net outflows improved to $5.9 billion, compared with $18.3 billion in the same quarter last year, across retail, model delivery and institutional asset flows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Firm executives said a chunk of the asset declines stemmed from Comerica shifting client assets to Fifth Third Bank as part of a <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/wealth-management-industry-trends\/fifth-third-and-comerica-combine-creating-100b-wealth-and-asset-management-business\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">merger announced last year<\/a>. Ameriprise <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/ameriprise-adds-28b-in-deal-with-buntington-banks-wealth-division\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">had been Comerica\u2019s investment program provider<\/a> and broker\/dealer since late 2023, overseeing about $18 billion in assets for Comerica\u2019s roughly 100 advisors.<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/raymond-james-recruiting-spend-helps-drive-net-new-asset-gains\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Raymond James Recruiting Spend Helps Drive Net New Asset Gains<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cWe anticipate the higher pace of outflows related to Comerica will continue in the second and third quarters, culminating with the conversion occurring near the end of the third quarter,\u201d Chief Financial Officer Walter Berman said on an earnings call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">The Comerica deal didn\u2019t result solely in outflows for Ameriprise, as the firm received a $25 million one-time \u201cmake-whole payment\u201d in connection with the transaction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Ameriprise also highlighted a deal <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/ameriprise-adds-28b-in-deal-with-buntington-banks-wealth-division\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">it signed in February with Huntington Bank,<\/a> under which Ameriprise will oversee $28 billion in client assets for about 260 Huntington advisors. Executives reported that the move is expected to be realized in the fourth quarter, with CEO Jim Cracchiolo saying, \u201cThere will be more opportunity for us\u201d for such partnerships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Berman also noted, however, that \u201chigher advisor departures\u201d were also partly due to the \u201caggressive recruiting environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Ameriprise, like most of its publicly listed peers, no longer breaks out quarterly advisor headcount. But the firm does seem to be ceding ground to firms like Raymond James, which this week reported <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/raymond-james-recruiting-spend-helps-drive-net-new-asset-gains\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increased spending on recruiting and retention<\/a>, and LPL Financial, which announced yet <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ria-news\/lpl-acquires-mariners-31b-platform-business\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">another acquisition deal this month<\/a> to further bolster its ranks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">On the call, Berman argued that Ameriprise\u2019s strategy will pay off in the long run, with the firm\u2019s organic growth creating a more sustainable runway.<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/stifel-ceo-mulls-ai-hopes-concerns\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stifel CEO Mulls AI Hopes, Concerns Amid Q1 Revenue Jump<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you evaluate growth coming from new assets via aggressive packages, and you look at the differential on payback, you almost have to be twice as much to get marginally close to what we are doing organically,\u201d he said. \u201cTurnover in the industry shows when someone leaves for a big check, they most likely leave again. If they leave for a better environment, culture, support that they and their clients relate to, they usually stay.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Cracchiolo also noted that 61 advisors joined Ameriprise in Q1, with more expected to join in Q2. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Berman also suggested that Ameriprise would be \u201cfurther enhancing\u201d its succession strategies for internal and external advisors, \u201cincluding expanding and leveraging Ameriprise\u2019s Personal Wealth Group, our centralized advisor group, as a potential succession option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Overall, Ameriprise\u2019s earnings beat Wall Street estimates by $75.4 million, to $4.77 billion, and its earnings per share beat estimates by $1.05, to $11.26, according to Seeking Alpha.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Net revenue for just the firm\u2019s advice and wealth management division was also up 14% year-over-year to $3.18 billion. Those results came even as operating expenses rose 12% to $2.2 billion, largely coming from advisor compensation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that Ameriprise Financial\u2019s strategy is appropriate, with the firm prioritizing its wealth management business, making judicious investments in its technology platform, product assortment and brand, and tightening its relationship with clients by investing behind Ameriprise Bank,\u201d Sean Dunlop, Morningstar\u2019s director and financial services analyst, wrote in an analyst\u2019s note. \u201cAs we see it, those are the key levers that the firm can pull to attract and retain both financial advisors and wealth management clients in a competitive environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Piper Sandler analyst Crispin Love maintained a neutral rating on the firm\u2019s stock after the earnings beat and improved pretax operating margins, while noting some downside risks, including continued losses from the Comerica move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cAsset management margins increased 43.8% from 40.4% and were above our 42.2% estimate as the segment benefited from expense initiatives with margins well above targeted levels,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHowever, Retirement &amp; Protection Solutions margins decreased slightly to 20% from 20.2% and were below our 22.7% estimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">The firm\u2019s stock was up in trading on Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ameriprise Financial saw total client net asset inflows in its wealth and advice division decline year over year&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":607965,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[39],"tags":[28,147,530],"class_list":["post-607964","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/607964","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=607964"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/607964\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/607965"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=607964"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=607964"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=607964"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
