Veteran Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who recently re-signed with the WNBA team on a one-year, $665,000 contract, said she was baptized for the second time earlier this month, recommitting her faith as an adult after being initially baptized as a child.<\/p>\n

In an April 14 post on TikTok<\/a>, the eight-season WNBA veteran shared a video of herself being baptized at Christ\u2019s Church of the Valley, a nondenominational Evangelical megachurch based in Phoenix, Arizona.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got baptized when I was little, but I was feeling a tug on my heart to do it on my terms as an adult! Such a fun, amazing day. Thank you, Jesus,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Addressing the decision at a press conference<\/a> on Tuesday, Cunningham, 29, said it is \u201cone of the better things\u201d she has done in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been a faithful person, but I just feel like now it\u2019s my own decision. One of the better things I\u2019ve done in my life is getting baptized,\u201d said Cunningham, who was cleared to play in February after suffering a knee injury in August 2025, according to The Indianapolis Star<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cunningham, who played the 2025 season with the Fever after six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, caused a stir after signing her new contract on April 12. She made comments on her \u201cShow Me Something\u201d podcast suggesting she was frustrated with a one-year deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Responding to her co-host, West Wilson, who asked whether the deal was better than she expected with the new collective bargaining agreement, Cunningham said:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s OK! No, it\u2019s fine. It\u2019s tough because I came off an injury, and I haven\u2019t been in front of any teams. I had a lot going on this offseason. I was fully cleared; they had all the doctors, they had the numbers and everything. But if you don\u2019t get in front of these people, it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, are you actually good?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She clarified on X<\/a> that she was not \u201cmad about the money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted more years because I love it here. I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That\u2019s it. That\u2019s the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana!!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Cunningham further stated<\/a> that she received multi-year offers from other teams but emphasized she was seeking stability when she made her comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt made me sound snotty and ungrateful, and that is the last thing I ever want. I am so grateful. I know I\u2019m coming off a pretty big knee injury, and so it was never about the money. It was just about the years because I wanted to be with them. God forbid, a girl loves her teammates,\u201d she said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m almost 30 years old. I want to have a home. I want to kind of get established. And I would love to get established in a place like Indiana,\u201d she added. \u201cWe had such a great time. When you find a group of girls who really make you fall in love with basketball again, and you enjoy it \u2014 not only on the court but off the court \u2014 you want to hold on to that. And so that\u2019s what I meant by that.\u201d<\/p>\n
