BELLEVILLE, Wis. \u2014 Amelia Meudt has always shared a special bond with her horses, finding comfort in their ability to sense her emotions. But last February, that joy suddenly disappeared when the young equestrian experienced a dramatic personality change that left her family desperately searching for answers.<\/p>\n
“I had all these intrusive thoughts, and I just couldn’t shake them out,” Amelia said. “I would have a panic attack every day for hours on end. I would call my mom from school like a couple of times a day.”<\/p>\n
What Amelia and her family didn’t know was that she was experiencing symptoms of PANDAS \u2014 Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. This rare condition occurs when a child’s immune response to a strep infection mistakenly attacks the brain instead of the bacteria.<\/p>\n
Dr. Miroslav Kovacevic, a leading expert who has diagnosed thousands of PANDAS patients since his first case in 1998, describes the condition’s sudden onset as shocking for families.<\/p>\n
“You put your child into bed as your child, the next morning the child wakes up as a completely different personality,” Kovacevic said.<\/p>\n
The condition presents with a range of severe symptoms including intrusive thoughts, unrelenting anxiety, hallucinations, memory loss and physical tics. Amelia’s mother, a nurse, documented her daughter’s panic attacks to show doctors, but initially found no answers to explain the dramatic change in her child’s behavior.<\/p>\n
“We are missing something here, I don’t know what it is but we need to look further, this is not just some weird presentation of anxiety, like there’s something going on here,” Amelia’s mother said.<\/p>\n
The challenge many families face is that PANDAS often goes undiagnosed and untreated because it remains relatively unknown in the medical community. Dr. Kovacevic points to a fundamental problem in how medical professionals approach such cases.<\/p>\n
“The division of illnesses into physical illness, and the mental illness is the root cause of the problem,” he said.<\/p>\n
Once properly diagnosed, treatment for PANDAS typically involves removing the adenoids and tonsils, often combined with IV therapy. Amelia underwent this treatment protocol and saw significant improvement within a few months.<\/p>\n
Today, she’s back to riding her horses and feeling more like herself again.<\/p>\n
“I was very thankful my mom was there all the time… I had very loving people beside me the entire time,” Amelia said.<\/p>\n
Her mother confirms the dramatic improvement: “She’s very much the Amelia we know and love. Yeah I would say she’s back in action.”<\/p>\n
While PANDAS remains relatively unknown to many parents and healthcare providers, studies indicate the condition affects approximately 1 in 100 children.
