The playoffs, so far, have been a quick trip down an elevator shaft, and fans are left reeling by the sudden collapse of the team. Down 2-1 in their first-round series against the Anaheim Ducks, it’s fair to contemplate an unsavoury future.

The club’s final 11 regular-season games showed quality growth. The Oilers outscored opponents 37-24 in those games, featured a team save percentage of .910 and a record of 7-2-2.

Since the playoffs began, the team has been poor in important aspects of the game, most notably allowing goals. A total of 16 have been scored by Anaheim through three games, with the Oilers returning to some bad habits that mostly disappeared in the final games of the regular season.

Those habits include overuse of stretch passes, massive gaps between forwards and defencemen on breakouts, an extreme lack of care with the puck and general malaise in coverage. At some point, these issues will be ironed out, or the Oilers will be in offseason mode in short order. What kind of fallout could this organization see over the summer? Here’s a look.

The coach

After losing in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row, the club re-signed forwards Trent Frederic and Kasperi Kapanen, added free-agent Andrew Mangiapane and later (on opening night of the regular season) Jack Roslovic.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch, who would receive a three-year extension in October (the contract kicks in this fall), built his coaching staff around incumbent Mark Stuart and new hires Paul McFarland, Peter Aubry and Conor Allen. Glen Gulutzan moved on to become the head coach of the Dallas Stars, and defence coach Paul Coffey returned to his previous role as special adviser to Oilers owner Daryl Katz.

Coffey would return midseason, with the team’s defence in chaos and a stunning inability to make a precise forward pass. It took some time, but Coffey was able to help the team’s six defenders eschew the stretch pass and embrace shorter passes and employ more individual transportation out of the defensive zone.

The postseason has seen the return of bad habits. Whatever happens to the roster, it would appear the coaching staff will not return intact. Knoblauch’s contract normally would provide strong job security, but the baffling inconsistency of the Oilers inside the defensive zone must be fixed. Fans should expect significant changes, up to and including Knoblauch. Despite the contract security.

In net

The Oilers haven’t enjoyed exceptional goaltending often during the seasons Connor McDavid has played for the team. Here are the team and league save percentages for each season of McDavid’s career:

                    YearOilersLeague Avg

2015-16

0.905

0.91

2016-17

0.914

0.91

2017-18

0.901

0.908

2018-19

0.896

0.905

2019-20

0.905

0.906

2020-21

0.91

0.903

2021-22

0.905

0.902

2022-23

0.9

0.899

2023-24

0.898

0.898

2024-25

0.894

0.893

2025-26

0.879

0.889

All numbers via Hockey-Reference

These numbers include all game states. The Oilers did have high points (notably Cam Talbot in 2016-17) in net but were about average in the two seasons Edmonton made the Cup Final. This season, the team’s save percentage is well below average.

Since it is universally agreed that the Oilers have yet to employ an elite goalie during the McDavid era, that should be the top priority for management this summer. It’s clearly established that the team is built for offence, and defensive lapses are part of the team structure. Acquiring a top-flight goaltender such as Jesper Wallstedt of the Minnesota Wild would represent an extreme upgrade in a position of need.

Final season for Nurse?

Ever since the Oilers signed defenceman Darnell Nurse to a long-term contract in the summer of 2021, player and management have been hearing about the deal from fans. Nurse is an established veteran defenceman who plays in the heart of the game and against tough opposition. The years without a championship may be having an impact on the organization’s view of the player, and it’s possible Nurse would be open to waiving his no-movement clause a year ahead of the contract restrictions easing.

The development of Evan Bouchard, and his latest contract, may mean Nurse will be shopped in the summer. There could be an appetite to change the overall mix of the defensive group, and Nurse would have high value.

The impact of the McDavid deal

McDavid’s latest contract is short compared to that of co-star Leon Draisaitl. For a team that appeared to have found a way to shoot the gap and sign all of its elite talent to long extensions, the two-year deal for the captain takes him to free agency in the summer of 2028.

A quick exit this spring may trigger some evaluations in terms of players and management. Would McDavid be open to an extension in the summer of 2027 if the team were no longer a strong contender? Would two quick exits change the desire for player and team to go long-term? Where does a McDavid crisis in Edmonton leave Bouchard and Draisaitl?

A McDavid exit would surely signal a remodel of the roster, and that could take years. Draisaitl is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2033. The team could contend with him as the centrepiece of the roster, but would the player want to stay? Would Bouchard?

The Oilers management has traded most of the future for the now. What if the “now” wants out?

Bottom line

Life comes at you fast. Oilers fans remember the shock of the 2015 draft lottery win well, and a summer of absolute euphoria in the NHL’s northernmost city. What has followed, a decade plus of stunning hockey played by the most talented hockey player on earth, has satisfied all desires but the most important one.

Would the captain sign another deal and extend his time with Draisaitl and Bouchard? That could mean passing up his best chance at the Stanley Cup. Considering what we know about McDavid, that would seem a bridge too far.

As the Oilers get ready for Sunday in Anaheim, things are tense in Edmonton. Oilers fans endured the Wayne Gretzky sale and will endure what may come. It won’t make it any less painful. The game in Anaheim on Sunday is massive.

By any measure, this has been an unusual season for the Edmonton Oilers.
