{"id":610703,"date":"2026-04-28T06:05:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T06:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/610703\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T06:05:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T06:05:11","slug":"capitals-cool-on-brussels-age-check-app-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/610703\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitals cool on Brussels age-check app\u00a0 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Digital ID kerfuffle\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The app\u00a0the Commission issued this month\u00a0is the latest hiccup\u00a0in a years-long\u00a0effort to get tech apps up and running to check the age of internet users.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brussels\u00a0and EU member capitals have\u00a0already\u00a0spent two years\u00a0working on \u201cdigital identity wallets,\u201d which\u00a0should be available across Europe\u00a0by the end of 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the EU executive announced\u00a0last July it would roll out a \u201cmini-wallet\u201d designed\u00a0to help tech platforms check the age of their users, as worries mounted about the impact of social media on the health of children.\u00a0The\u00a0mini-wallet\u00a0was meant\u00a0to come out before the broader digital ID\u00a0apps; it&#8217;s the one the\u00a0Commission\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/online-age-checks-are-coming-europe-children-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">showcased<\/a>\u00a0in mid-April\u00a0and is\u00a0officially recommending to countries this week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Countries that were already working on their own\u00a0digital ID\u00a0apps, like Denmark, France, Greece and Spain, were selected to be frontrunners in testing the\u00a0mini-wallet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Poland\u2019s Digital Affairs State Secretary\u00a0Dariusz\u00a0Standerski,\u00a0the new\u00a0app is \u201csecondary\u201d and\u00a0\u201ccomplementary\u201d\u00a0to the\u00a0broader\u00a0digital ID\u00a0wallet the country has been working on.
