Genius anxiety hack or just a hack that should be sacked?<\/p>\n

Some 19% of adults<\/a> have an anxiety disorder, with Gen Zers notably packing panic pouches<\/a> to calm themselves down. Those struggling with anxiety are reaching for any relief they can find \u2014 even if it means testing their own solutions.<\/p>\n

An over-the-counter one-two punch has gone viral amid claims that it reduces anxiety symptoms, but some doctors are uneasy about the unusual combo.<\/p>\n

Taking an allergy medication with a nausea and heartburn drug may not immediately come to mind to stop mental distress.<\/p>\n

But many have taken to social media to hype the magic of Pepcid with Allegra.<\/p>\n

Both medications are antihistamines, though they work on different parts of the body.<\/p>\n

Allegra, also known as fexofenadine<\/a>, is a seasonal allergy drug that blocks histamine \u2014 responsible for sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes\u2014 without causing drowsiness.<\/p>\n

While Allegra targets H1 receptors, Pepcid (or famotidine<\/a>) works on H2 receptors to reduce stomach acid production that causes heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel an ounce of depression,\u201d one TikTokker<\/a> crowed about the pairing. \u201cI\u2019m about to go into therapy, and I don\u2019t even know what to talk about anymore because I\u2019m not sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others have echoed these sentiments, with another woman saying her Lexapro prescription didn\u2019t do as good of a job melting away her anxiety about the \u201cworld burning<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

As these claims swept TikTok, Dr. Zachary Rubin, an Illinois allergist-immunologist, told users<\/a> to exercise caution before heading to the pharmacy. <\/p>\n

Pepcid and Allegra are peripheral antihistamines, meaning they don\u2019t generally cross the blood-brain barrier.<\/p>\n

This means there\u2019s no evidence that the combo can effectively treat depression.<\/p>\n

Research has indicated<\/a> that famotidine may reduce anxiety and depression symptoms in people with COVID-19 by managing neuroinflammation. Studies on the effects of fexofenadine on anxiety are limited.<\/p>\n

The immediate, same-day relief could be attributed to a number of other factors, such as allergies impacting sleep, focus and mood.<\/p>\n

The viral hack could also have the reverse effect for some.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some people \u2026 it could actually make you worse if those medications are somehow able to get into your brain,\u201d Rubin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can make you have fatigue, difficulty concentrating and feel very sleepy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He also reminded viewers that anecdotal stories are low-quality evidence of a treatment\u2019s effectiveness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t verify what people are saying on the internet and whether or not the medications that they\u2019re taking are actually effective,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While there are no warnings against taking the medications together<\/a>, some Pepcid formulations contain magnesium, which can decrease Allegra\u2019s effectiveness if taken at the same time.<\/p>\n
