SEATTLE — Bird populations and diversity in Seattle’s parks and green spaces have declined significantly over the past two decades, according to a new analysis by Birds Connect Seattle, raising concerns about the long-term health of the city’s urban ecosystem.

The report, titled “Fewer and Fewer,” draws on data from the organization’s long-running Neighborhood Bird Project, a community science effort that has tracked bird species in Seattle-area parks since 1994. The project relies on standardized monthly surveys conducted by volunteers across multiple sites.

Researchers found notable declines in both the number of birds and the diversity of species recorded in many of the monitored locations. The findings reflect broader regional and continental trends, but highlight the impacts of urbanization at a local level, the report said.

Standardized counts between 2005 and 2023 show bird numbers dropping across most surveyed parks, with some locations experiencing particularly steep declines. Overall, bird counts in Seattle parks fell by about 21% over that period, according to the analysis.

Particular population drops in well-known areas include:

Lake Forest Park: Bird population fell by 42%Washington Park Arboretum: Bird population fell about 41%, Golden Gardens: Bird population down 36% Discovery Park: Bird population down 25%

An outlier was Genesee Park, where counts grew by 135% – but this was driven by a single species: the American Coot. Large flocks of the bird began appearing at the park at the end of the study period, but the study noted that “such extreme counts can overwhelm more typical observations and create the appearance of strong growth in overall bird numbers.” Genesee also experienced an 11% decline in bird species richness with the advent of the coot.

Scientists involved in the project emphasized that the counts are designed to track trends over time rather than provide exact population totals, but said the downward pattern is clear and concerning.

The report attributes the declines to a range of pressures associated with urban environments, including habitat loss, tree canopy reduction, and changes to park infrastructure. Even relatively small alterations — such as the removal of nesting sites — can have significant consequences for local bird populations, researchers said.

Launched more than 30 years ago, the Neighborhood Bird Project has grown into one of the longest-running urban bird monitoring efforts in the country. Hundreds of volunteers have contributed data over time, helping scientists and advocates better understand how bird communities respond to changes in city landscapes.

Birds Connect Seattle, a nonprofit focused on urban bird conservation, said the findings underscore the need for more intentional city planning and habitat protection. The organization advocates for strategies such as preserving tree canopy, reducing urban hazards and improving green space management to support bird populations.

The report also highlights the role of community science in tracking environmental change and encouraging public engagement.

Some simple steps the public can take include:

Keeping cats indoors.Reducing pesticide use.Making windows safer for birds.Turning off lights at night.

Organizers say other simple actions, such as participating in bird surveys or learning to identify local species, can help build awareness and support for conservation efforts.

SEATTLE — Bird populations and diversity in Seattle’s parks and green spaces have declined significantly over the past…

[47
192,79
post-612285","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
