Lionsgate will release the films in theaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Resurrection of the Christ\u201d is the follow-up to 2004\u2019s biblical epic \u201cThe Passion of the Christ,\u201d which, until last year, was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time at the domestic box office with $370 million. That record was recently supplanted by Disney\u2019s \u201cDeadpool &amp; Wolverine,\u201d which earned a mammoth $636 million domestically. \u201cThe Passion of the Christ\u201d remains one of the biggest independent films ever, with $610 million globally against a $30 million production budget. In addition to commercial glory, the movie was nominated at the Oscars for best makeup, cinematography and original score.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe original film, starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, followed the final 12 hours before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Gibson <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/mel-gibson-passion-of-the-christ-sequel-production-1236271551\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/mel-gibson-passion-of-the-christ-sequel-production-1236271551\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has described the sequels<\/a> as an \u201cacid trip,\u201d adding that he \u201cnever read anything like\u201d the scripts, which the filmmaker has been writing alongside Randall Wallace. As the title suggests, the plot is expected to focus on Jesus Christ\u2019s resurrection. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson, whose career was derailed by several <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/mel-gibson-controversies-career-1234696080\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">off-screen controversies<\/a>, returned to studio filmmaking for the first time in eight years with this January\u2019s \u201cFlight Risk.\u201d The plane-set thriller, starring Mark Wahlberg, failed to ignite at the box office with just $48 million globally.
