The Marlins are placing closer\u00a0Pete Fairbanks<\/a> on the 15-day injured list with nerve irritation, reports Christina De Nicola of MLB.com<\/a>. The righty left last night\u2019s loss to the Dodgers with hand numbness. Miami recalled lefty Cade Gibson<\/a>\u00a0from Triple-A Jacksonville in the corresponding move.<\/p>\n

Fairbanks\u2019 time in Miami has gotten out to a rough start. He has surrendered 10 runs on nine hits, four walks, and a hit batter through his first nine innings. Fairbanks has technically gone 5-6 in save chances, but he has now had a trio of outings in which he has allowed three runs. That included last night\u2019s tough appearance at Dodger Stadium.<\/p>\n

Called upon to protect a 4-2 lead, Fairbanks walked\u00a0Andy Pages<\/a> and\u00a0Dalton Rushing<\/a>. After\u00a0Miguel Rojas<\/a> popped up a bunt attempt,\u00a0Shohei Ohtani<\/a> hit an RBI ground-rule double. The Marlins then intentionally walked\u00a0Freddie Freeman<\/a>. Fairbanks left the game with the bases loaded after the team noticed the hand discomfort.\u00a0Tyler Phillips<\/a> was pressed into a difficult situation and gave up a walk-off, two-run single to\u00a0Kyle Tucker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fairbanks signed a one-year, $13MM free agent deal over the winter. He was a priority target for a Miami team that needed a high-leverage reliever to replace the injured\u00a0Ronny Henriquez<\/a>. Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix was previously the GM in Tampa Bay and knows Fairbanks well.<\/p>\n

De Nicola notes that the Marlins are hopeful it\u2019ll be a minimal injured list stay. Fairbanks had avoided the IL last season but has had a history of nerve issues. That has previously been connected to Raynaud\u2019s syndrome, a diminished blood flow that leads to numbness in his fingers \u2014 usually in cold weather. The cold wasn\u2019t an issue last night and it\u2019s unclear if this nerve situation is related to the Raynaud\u2019s condition. Fairbanks missed three weeks with a nerve issue between April-May 2024.<\/p>\n

Phillips,\u00a0Anthony Bender<\/a>, and\u00a0Michael Petersen<\/a> each have one save in the early going. Petersen is generally a lower-leverage arm.
