{"id":612649,"date":"2026-04-29T05:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T05:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/612649\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T05:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T05:14:13","slug":"a-lifeline-for-haiti-could-soon-be-severed-by-the-us-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/612649\/","title":{"rendered":"A lifeline for Haiti could soon be severed by the US Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj64par000x2dov9dm7btsg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ysmael is already feeling the squeeze of rising prices in Haiti. \u201cEverything has gone up,\u201d she says in a World Food Programme video, from the fare for a ride on a \u201ctap-tap\u201d bus to the cost of putting dinner on the table, all due to fuel price hikes linked to the Iran war.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43e0008356qiv8o0j1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But those who managed to leave the violence-wracked, impoverished nation, making a life for themselves in the United States, are helping people back home stay afloat. That money has been a lifeline for many, in one of the most remittance-dependent countries in the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43e0009356qy0jaj279@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That could come to a grinding halt if the US Supreme Court allows the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 350,000 Haitians \u2013 a status that lets them legally live and work in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43e000a356q5hqpy5a6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In February, the US Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/02\/politics\/tps-haitians-trump-termination-blocked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paused<\/a> the administration\u2019s termination of TPS \u2013 an immigration status granted to people from certain countries where conditions temporarily prevent their nationals from safely returning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43f000b356qb96d5b62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, the court will start to hear oral arguments after the Trump administration appealed the decision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43f000c356qwodlne8j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ahead of the anticipated termination earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security said the program for Haiti \u201cwas never intended to be a de facto asylum program, yet that\u2019s how previous administrations have used it for decades.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43f000d356qjmginvx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the administration, opening the door for hundreds of thousands of Haitians to be deported, \u201cit would be like having the rug pulled out from under you,\u201d says Amnesty International USA\u2019s Director of Refugee and Migrant Rights, Amy Fischer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8r43f000e356qyt0u1dwv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe know that people simply cannot be deported safely to Haiti,\u201d says Fischer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj6ocft0004356qmsyow9fv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gang attacks continue to shake the nation, with a spate of deadly assaults in Haiti\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/30\/americas\/haiti-gang-attack-violence-intl-latam\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artibonite region<\/a> last month. Dozens were killed and thousands fled their homes, pushing Haiti\u2019s existing displacement crisis closer to the brink.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000h356q03wmxyus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And earlier this month, armed attacks on a police station in the commune of Marigot in the country\u2019s south left at least six dead, according to police.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000i356qc0ctshzp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Haitian rights groups like Defenders Plus, say the violence is even reaching areas that were once seen as \u201chavens of peace.\u201d Armed groups who block roads and key supply routes have made access to necessities near impossible in some cases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000j356qg038z2pb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Communities are still facing daily challenges accessing food, water and basic services because of the rampant insecurity, says CARE\u2019s interim country director in Haiti, Rachelle Arnoux.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000k356qxor8na8g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jerome Fritsch, a physician at the MSF hospital in Cite Soleil, says the gang violence is hindering people from seeking much-needed medical care. Two weekends ago, he says rival armed groups were fighting, in a flare-up of violence his team says is the worst they\u2019ve seen in the area in two years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000l356qu5jh7vn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The violence lasted until last Wednesday, but the team still has its guard up. Ready to seek shelter as needed and move patients away from windows where they could be exposed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000m356qk1j8wt9p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have no idea if tomorrow it\u2019s going to start again,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000n356qbcemsdoi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And then there\u2019s the food insecurity that has reached staggering levels for millions of Haitians. According to a recent Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcinfo.org\/ipc-country-analysis\/details-map\/en\/c\/1162842\/?iso3=HTI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IPC)<\/a> projection for March to June 2026, 52 percent of the population are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000o356q9e6yaq4z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Haiti\u2019s recent catastrophic floods have only compounded the country\u2019s overlapping crises. The United Nations\u2019 humanitarian office said this month that rainfall triggered severe flooding in the North-West department, killing at least 12 people, flooding more than 1,000 homes, displacing people and leading to agricultural and livelihood losses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000p356qq1b296an@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDeportation is not an option right now,\u201d said Guerline Jozef, head of The Haitian Bridge Alliance, an advocacy group that focuses on migration issues facing Black migrants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000q356quu6j78rb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If TPS holders are stripped of their status and deported, the results could be catastrophic, rights groups warn. Thousands of TPS holders stand to lose the life they built for themselves in the US \u2013 but millions of Haitians back home could see their lives upended, plunged further into extreme poverty, hunger, and displacement.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c-gettyimages-2266547727.jpg\" alt=\"A protester holds a sign calling on the US Supreme Court to uphold Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian refugees in front of the court in Washington, DC, on March 16.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000r356qirzhb96i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we cut off those ties that Haitians in the United States have to be able to send back that money, we can only predict that it will force more people to leave Haiti, searching for safety and stability,\u201d warns Fischer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj9lm3g0014356qbecjdqcd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Approximately 750,000 households in Haiti receive remittances from Haitians in the US, says Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue. About 40% of those remitters in the US are likely on TPS, he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj9p4uj0003356q25h3tx7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For some people, it\u2019s their only income and sole way of affording food and medication.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000t356qtd5icz4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to Inter-American Dialogue, Haitian migrants\u2019 transfers went from 12 percent of the country\u2019s GDP in 2012 to more than a quarter in 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000u356qqcciywmq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/thedialogue.org\/blogs\/2022\/12\/do-remittances-have-a-dark-side-in-haiti#:~:text=In%20the%20last%2010%20years,mitigate%20the%20incidence%20of%20poverty.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Remittances<\/a> are Haiti\u2019s main source of foreign exchange, according to the think tank, which said the funds \u201cmainly help sustain private consumption, pay for school fees as well as healthcare and thus end up improving the country\u2019s human development outcomes and mitigate the incidence of poverty.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoj8riey000v356q6ai093ye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a UN Security Council session on Haiti this month, leaders recognized some progress being made in the security situation \u2013 albeit a drop in the ocean.
