MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department in partnership with the United States Attorney\u2019s Office for the Western District of Tennessee are working to put the most violent repeat domestic abuse offenders behind bars in federal prison.<\/p>\n
MPD\u2019s Domestic Violence Prolific Offender Initiative seeks to coordinate with federal prosecutors to identify the city\u2019s most violent offenders and build the strongest possible cases through coordinated enforcement. <\/p>\n
\u201cAddressing domestic violence requires a focused, coordinated. and collaborative approach,\u201d Chief C. J. Davis said. \u201cBy working alongside our federal partners, we are strengthening accountability for the most dangerous offenders while continuing to support victims and prevent future violence. This is part of our ongoing commitment to reduce crime and build a safer Memphis for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Federal charges often include enhanced penalties and sentencing rules as it pertains to bodily harm and use of a firearm. <\/p>\n
There is no parole in the federal system. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to partner with MPD in their Domestic Violence Prolific Offender Initiative. Persons with histories of domestic violence present a known and immediate risk of violence to their families and the community at large. The presence of a firearm during a crime of domestic violence dramatically increases the chances that the victim or other family members in the household, including children, will be fatally shot. Through our aggressive federal prosecution of these known abusers, we can incapacitate and hold dangerous offenders accountable, send a strong message of deterrence, reduce violent crime rates, and ultimately save lives,\u201d U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant said.<\/p>\n
Six cases have already been referred for federal prosecution as part of the MPD\u2019s Domestic Violence Prolific Offender Initiative. <\/p>\n
Memphis Police said that this partnership reflects the coordinated efforts of interagency collaboration, strong prosecution, and enhancing public safety through strategic enforcement. <\/p>\n
MPD encourages victims and witnesses of domestic violence to report incidents and seek available resources or support. <\/p>\n
