North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and State Treasurer Brad Briner on Thursday announced the terms of a settlement with an EpiPen manufacturer that will bring the state millions.<\/p>\n
Jackson said the company that sold the EpiPens, Mylan, participated in anti-competitive practices that allowed them to raise the price and overcharge for their product. A settlement will mean a refund for some in our state.<\/p>\n
“From 2007 to 2016, the price of this went from about $100 to about $600, a 6X increase in under a decade,” Jackson said while holding an EpiPen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The terms of the settlement determine that the state will get $11 million with a big chunk of that going to taxpayers.<\/p>\n
“We also negotiated a reduction in out-of-pocket costs for all families going forward,” Jackson said. “This is a very important message to send to prescription drug manufacturers everywhere, that if we have good evidence that you’ve broken the law, we’re going to hold you accountable.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“As someone who carries an EpiPen and someone who has a child who carries an EpiPen, this particularly hits close to home for me,” Briner said. <\/p>\n
$4.2 million of this settlement comes to the state health plan … this money belongs to the people of North Carolina, it’ll go right back to keeping premiums down.”<\/p>\n
This isn’t the first instance of a lawsuit against Mylan in our state. In 2017, then-Attorney General Josh Stein announced the state would settle with Mylan for $21.4 million. The most recent lawsuit was launched after the previous class action suit was settled.<\/p>\n
