State officials disclosed the seizure Tuesday in a post marking California Ocean Day, describing it as part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal wildlife trade. Prosecutors are now reviewing the case, the agency said.

According to the department, the case began when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a tip that a private jet departing Hawaii was transporting shark fins. The aircraft left before it could be stopped, officials said, but California wildlife officers stopped it after it landed in the state.

The people on board admitted they had shark fins and consented to a search of the aircraft, the department said. Officers found 40 suspected fins, including dried and frozen specimens, and seized them.

California law bans the possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins. The state enacted that prohibition in 2011 through Assembly Bill 376, which was authored by a South Bay lawmaker and took effect in 2013. In 2015, a federal appeals court upheld the law after suppliers and sellers challenged it.

The wildlife agency did not identify the people involved, the owner of the aircraft, the shark species believed to be involved or where in California the jet landed.

The department said the case has been submitted to the appropriate district attorney’s office. The investigation remains active as officials work to determine the source of the fins and whether the shipment was connected to a broader trafficking network.

Shark finning — the practice of removing a shark’s fins and discarding the animal — is illegal under federal law. Wildlife officials and conservation groups have long argued that the trade fuels cruelty and threatens marine ecosystems by reducing populations of apex predators that help keep ocean food webs in balance.

State officials disclosed the seizure Tuesday in a post marking California Ocean Day, describing it as part of…

[51
2356,3071,79,201
post-616723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-california","tag-crime","tag-science","tag-wildlife
["GET
