As global temperatures rise, data centers for artificial intelligence are creating \u201cheat islands\u201d that could have significant impacts on communities and their surrounding environments in the years to come, a March 2026 study<\/a> shows, raising alarm among international researchers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The preprint of the study, which has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, looked at data from 2004 to 2024.<\/p>\n

Researchers from multiple institutions, including the University of Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University, used satellite data from that time to assess rising land surface temperatures at AI data centers worldwide. After conducting an analysis, they estimated that surrounding surface areas typically increase by an average of 2 degrees Celsius \u2014 or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit \u2014 once AI centers start operating, suggesting that the data center heat island effect \u201cis real and significant, especially in the context of global warming and climate transformation.\u201d Overall, \u201cour results show that the data heat island effect could have a remarkable influence on communities and regional welfare in the future,\u201d researchers said in the study.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The implications also suggest that building AI data centers in heat-stricken areas of California could have dire consequences on local communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are one of the hottest places on Earth,\u201d Anahi Araiza, the head of policy and community research for Imperial Valley Equity and Justice, previously told SFGATE. \u201cIt\u2019s mind-boggling to believe that these projects won\u2019t have an impact on our water and energy infrastructure or significantly contribute to air pollution and noise pollution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency, however, seems eager to plow ahead on AI development. When\u00a0SFGATE shared the study with the EPA press department and asked specific questions about data centers\u2019 potential impacts, a representative said that under Lee Zeldin\u2019s leadership, the agency plans to fulfill Trump\u2019s goal to make the United States \u201cthe AI capital of the world\u201d as part of the \u201c\u2018Powering the Great American Comeback\u2019 initiative.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump EPA understands that we can both protect the environment and grow the economy, fulfilling our core mission and first pillar: ensuring clean air, land, and water for every American,\u201d EPA representatives told SFGATE.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, just this past week at a congressional hearing, Democrats accused Zeldin\u2019s EPA of abandoning its core values to protect humans and the environment, the Guardian reported<\/a>. Last summer, more than 150 staffers sent a letter to Zeldin expressing concern about his leadership, the New Yorker said,<\/a> and on April 30, the publication described Zeldin spending his time \u201cgutting the agency he runs.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
