The snow has melted, spring flowers are in bloom<\/a>, and temperatures are finally on the rise. It\u2019s the moment we\u2019ve been waiting for\u2014but as the seasons shift, so does the return of an all-too-familiar nuisance: mosquitoes.<\/p>\n This year, their arrival may feel especially relentless (and early), experts say, thanks to a mix of favorable weather conditions and ideal breeding environments.<\/p>\n To find out what that really means for your outdoor spaces, we spoke with a mosquito expert who provided important mosquito prevention tips.<\/p>\n Meet the Expert<\/p>\n Dan Markowski<\/a>, Ph.D., is the Technical Advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA).<\/p>\n Why Will Mosquitoes Be So Bad This Season? Credit: Jacques Julien \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n Mosquito populations are weather-dependent, which means predictions often vary by region. That said, experts agree that erratic winter weather combined with surging spring temperatures and higher-than-average precipitation is setting the stage for an early and aggressive mosquito season.<\/p>\n While parts of the country experienced a mild winter, others were buried under heavy snowpacks\u2014both of which can result in higher pest populations in their own way.<\/p>\n Dan Markowski, Technical Advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA), notes that the midwest, west, and south-central U.S. will likely be hit especially hard, particularly in the spring and early summer.<\/p>\n \u201cI’ve polled numerous mosquito program directors around the country, and all seem to agree that it’s likely to be an early and busy spring season, especially where they’re seeing warmer-than-normal temperatures combined with heavy rainfall,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n In the south-central U.S., wet spring conditions are creating ideal breeding grounds after a warm, mild winter. As a result, experts expect very high mosquito numbers early in the season, particularly through late May and early June, Markowski says.<\/p>\n In the west, states such as California are already battling mosquitoes, with some species emerging more than a month ahead of schedule due to warm, wet conditions. Markowski says that\u2019s likely to continue into the summer months other western states.<\/p>\n The midwest is experiencing an unusually wet spring, which is predicted to drive large populations of spring-breeding mosquitoes. Markowski says residents can expect significant mosquito activity in May and June.<\/p>\n Whether the aggressive mosquito season will continue into the late summer and fall in these regions will depend on temperatures and on whether rainfall continues, both of which are variable and harder to accurately predict months in advance.<\/p>\n How to Control Mosquitoes in Your Outdoor Space<\/p>\n Ready to prep your home for all of these mosquitoes? Markowski says finding and eliminating mosquito breeding sites on your property<\/a> is always the most important step.<\/p>\n \u201cThe most common biting mosquitoes in most areas are not strong fliers and breed very close to where they’re biting,\u201d he adds. (Think: within 200 to 300 feet.)<\/p>\n In other words, you can keep your mosquito-prevention methods to controlled, especially problematic areas.<\/p>\n What Should You Avoid? Credit: ThamKC \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n Pools of stagnant water: Standing water with decaying organic matter like leaves, soil, or grass clippings is the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Adult mosquitoes lay their eggs on or near water, and the larvae develop in the water, feeding on organic matter until they\u2019re mature enough to leave the water to bite.<\/p>\n Buckets, flower pots, tarps, wheelbarrows, tires, clogged gutters, and birdbaths: These the most common culprits, Markowski says. Draining, dumping, or filling in these sites regularly is the easiest way to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.<\/p>\n What Can You Add? Credit: Henadzi Pechan \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n Insecticides: If standing water can\u2019t be easily drained or dumped, Markowski says you can also treat the water with an approved mosquito insecticide, such as Mosquito Dunks, which are environmentally friendly and won\u2019t harm other beneficial pollinators or wildlife.<\/p>\n Residual or fogger type sprays: If breeding sites don\u2019t seem to be a problem on your property, your only option may be to apply residual or fogger-type sprays to reduce adult activity, but Markowski cautions that these products come with risks. Specifically, they can be highly toxic to bees and other insects.<\/p>\n \u201cTo minimize the harm to beneficial insects, spray only in the evening, and avoid blooming or flowering plants,” Markowski advises. “Using these chemicals repeatedly can also cause some mosquitoes to develop resistance to these insecticides, so apply them no more than once per month.\u201d<\/p>\n Mosquito-Busting Methods That Won’t Work<\/p>\n![\"Credit:](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d2a98d6b3949e9ffaa47bcbba1a848aa.jpeg\"\/)
