\n Sinner eyes history as Zverev awaits in Madrid final<\/p>\n
World No. 1 is riding a 22-match streak, but a two-time champion stands in his way<\/p>\n

Jannik Sinner<\/a> and Alexander Zverev<\/a> will meet for the fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 event, but this time, with the title on the line at the Mutua Madrid Open<\/a>. Can the World No. 1 once again get the better of his familiar rival and continue his charge toward history in the Spanish capital?<\/p>\n Sinner heads into Sunday\u2019s final (not before 5 p.m. CEST\/11 a.m. ET) on the brink of becoming the first player to win five consecutive trophies at this level, having triumphed in in Paris last year, and in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo in 2026. Zverev fell to Sinner in the semi-finals in each of those events, but the two-time Madrid champion will take confidence from familiar conditions.<\/p>\n \u201cHe’s World No. 1 and hasn’t lost a match since the beginning of February,\u201d Zverev said of Sinner, who is on a 22-match winning streak. \u201cI think right now he’s definitely the best player in the world. I think I have to play very, very good tennis to have a chance. But I know I’m capable of doing that, and I will try to do my best on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n While Sinner has set the benchmark for consistency, Zverev has quietly built an impressive run of his own. The German has reached at least the semi-finals in six of his seven events this season, and he snapped a lingering last-four drought \u2014 dating back to Paris in November \u2014 with a composed victory over 21-year-old breakout star Alexander Blockx<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n History, however, is firmly on Sinner\u2019s side. The Italian has won their past eight Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings, a streak stretching back to Cincinnati in 2024, and he has not dropped a set to Zverev since their three-set Vienna final last October. If Zverev is to turn the tide in Madrid, he will need to fully capitalise on the quicker conditions.<\/p>\n Zverev won more than 80 per cent of first-serve points in both his quarter-final against Flavio Cobolli<\/a> and his semi-final against Blockx \u2014 a level he will likely need to replicate, or exceed, to trouble Sinner. The Italian, meanwhile, has been relentless throughout his campaign, reeling off 10 consecutive sets after dropping the opener against Benjamin Bonzi<\/a>.<\/p>\n Watch Extended Highlights of Madrid SFs:<\/p>\n Beyond his trademark baseline consistency, Sinner has also shown increasing variety, mixing in drop shots and subtle changes of pace, which are weapons that could once again make the difference. Still, the World No. 1 remains committed to his instinctive, fearless approach.<\/p>\n \u201cI like to play with the gut feeling,\u201d Sinner said when asked about facing big moments in matches. \u201cThat’s what I feel at that moment, and I just try to go for it, honestly. There is no real key. I think I would rather go for it and miss a ball than wait for the opponent to miss. I’ve always been like this. Obviously not every time you can play like this, it’s also depending how you feel. This is just how I see it.\u201d<\/p>\n By reaching the final at all four Masters 1000 events this season, Sinner has already placed himself in elite company, becoming the fourth \u2014 and youngest \u2014 player to achieve the feat<\/a>, alongside Roger Federer<\/a>, Rafael Nadal<\/a>, and Novak Djokovic<\/a>. Now, the 24-year-old stands on the verge of standing alone as the first man to win five straight titles at this level.<\/p>\n Sinner has also opened up a commanding 1,040-point lead over Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, with the Spaniard sidelined for the remainder of the clay swing<\/a>. Zverev, meanwhile, has solidified his place as World No. 3 and is chasing a third Madrid crown.<\/p>\n With a 30-6 record in the Spanish capital, according to the Infosys ATP Win\/Loss Index, Zverev\u2019s pedigree here is undeniable. But against the Tour\u2019s most dominant force, he faces his toughest test yet. Will the German snap his eight-match losing streak against Sinner?
