The fund was created by Congress in 2000 to reverse the decline of Pacific salmon populations.<\/p>\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says 28 species of salmon are endangered and at risk of vanishing from rivers and streams. NOAA says many other populations not on the list are not far behind after substantial reductions in their numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the nearly $100 million is aimed at restoring habitat that is either blocked or damaged. The goal of the new money is to restore more areas where salmon can spawn and make it easier for fish to get to those areas.<\/p>\n<p>Often, projects to restore salmon habitat are led by local Native tribes.
