And for Star Wars Day, we\u2019re focusing on one of the film\u2019s less appreciated characters: step forward C-3PO, the shiny golden droid with the personality of a ma\u00eetre d\u2019\u00a0who is absolutely not admitting you to the fancy restaurant, no, I\u2019m afraid not, sir, not under any circumstances whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Threepio was in the news last month when the original head prop from The Empire Strikes Back fetched over $1 million at auction<\/a>, making it one of the most expensive<\/a> pieces of Star Wars-related memorabilia ever sold. (If you haven\u2019t seen the film for a while, the head is separated from its owner after he wanders through the wrong door<\/a> in Cloud City.) But if you thought you\u2019d missed out on the chance to have a C-3PO head on your coffee table, never fear, because you can build your own\u2014and it\u2019ll even talk to you, if that\u2019s what you really want.<\/p>\n

Samuel Potozkin, a student at Chapman University in Orange County, CA, recently posted a video<\/a> cataloging the process of building a DIY C-3PO head that will hold a conversation with you. The head\u2019s speech capabilities are powered, inevitably, by AI\u2014specifically, they rely on a custom LLM that\u2019s imbued with Tattooine\u2019s prissiest personality.<\/p>\n

Conceptually, the pipeline is pretty simple: your speech is picked up by a microphone, which is hooked up to a Raspberry Pi 5. The little computer runs a real-time text-to-speech converter, and once it\u2019s done converting your side of the conversation, it sends the text to the aforementioned LLM as a prompt. The LLM\u2019s response is then run back through a text-to-speech system designed to emulate C-3PO\u2019s distinctive vocal delivery. And bam, there you have it: a chance to experience what it\u2019s like to be R2-D2 for a day.<\/p>\n

If you want to know more about the project, Potozkin provides all the details you could ever want in a paper<\/a> published on his GitHub page. There are some genuinely interesting details to be found\u2014for example, after testing the initial text-to-speech output, Potozkin found that it \u201cdid not \u2026 align with the metallic vocal tone associated with C-3PO.\u201d He describes the audio post-processing that he used to achieve that tone, which honestly sounds more like your favorite guitarist\u2019s pedalboard setup than anything else: \u201cA short delay line was introduced to create tightly spaced temporal reflections, [and] a chorus effect was applied by slightly modulating the time and pitch of duplicated signal paths, creating the impression of layered vocal resonance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is certainly impressive: the voice sounds enough like C-3PO that it\u2019d be recognizable even if it wasn\u2019t emanating from a disembodied C-3PO head. But, well, it is, and next May the 4th, you too could make a talking C-3PO head the centerpiece of your annual Star Wars viewing session! What do you make of that idea, R2?<\/p>\n
