A man was wounded by U.S. Secret Service after allegedly shooting at officers near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon, according to law enforcement.<\/p>\n

A man was wounded by U.S. Secret Service after allegedly shooting at officers near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon, according to the agency\u2019s deputy director.<\/p>\n

A child, whose age isn\u2019t publicly known, was also struck by a bullet during the exchange of gunfire, Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said during a news conference.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in D.C., near the Sidney R. Yates building where the Forest Service is headquartered, according to the U.S. Secret Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Quinn said Secret Service officers dressed in regular clothes, not uniforms, noticed a person who appeared to have a firearm while patrolling around the outer perimeter of the White House complex at around 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

They alerted uniformed officers with the Secret Service who tried to approach the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon making contact, that individual fled briefly on foot, withdrew a firearm and fired in the direction of our agents and officers, they returned fire and engaged,\u201d Quinn said.<\/p>\n

The man was hospitalized after being shot; his condition is unclear.<\/p>\n

Investigators believe the child was shot by the armed man, not law enforcement.<\/p>\n

Police only described the child who was wounded as a juvenile. Quinn said the child was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that are not considered life threatening.<\/p>\n

The shots were fired blocks from the White House, which was briefly put under a lockdown as law enforcement investigated.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot long before this shooting occurred, the vice president\u2019s motorcade did transit through this area,\u201d Quinn said.<\/p>\n

Quinn said there is no indication the man was targeting the motorcade.<\/p>\n

D.C. police said the scene is \u201csecure\u201d in a social media post<\/a>. Their department will investigate the Secret Service officers\u2019 use of force.<\/p>\n

Road closures<\/p>\n

WTOP Traffic<\/a> reports several roadways nearby the Washington Monument have been closed by police, causing major backups during the afternoon rush.<\/p>\n

A portion of Independence Avenue SW is closed from 14th Street to Maine Avenue SW. Police said<\/a> 15th Street is also closed from Constitution Avenue NW to Maine Avenue SW.<\/p>\n

D.C. police said to expect the closures to last for several hours. The exact closure points could change, police asked drivers to follow directions from law enforcement.<\/p>\n
