Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has questioned whether Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wanted to sign Viktor Gyokeres this summer.<\/p>\n
The Gunners have made six new signings so far this summer<\/a> with Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera all joining.<\/p>\n Arsenal<\/a> were negotiating with Man Utd-bound Benjamin Sesko<\/a> at the same time as holding talks over Gyokeres earlier in the summer and Scholes has doubts that the former Sporting Lisbon striker is what Arteta wanted.<\/p>\n Scholes said on The Overlap<\/a>: \u201cYeah, centre-forward, just wonder if you\u2019ve chose the right one, you don\u2019t know until it happens.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause there was a lot of umming and ahhing about it and it was taking a bit of time, I was wondering \u2014 does Arteta really want him? Is he the main one he wants? I wasn\u2019t too sure.<\/p>\n \u201cBut look, he\u2019s got him, and he\u2019s had a really strange career path, I think, hasn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n MEDIAWATCH:\u00a0Man United and Liverpool in transfer crisis amid bidding wars and scuppered double deals<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cHe has, honestly, Brighton, Coventry, and he\u2019s gone to Sporting Lisbon. His goal record is absolutely brilliant, you can\u2019t take that away from him, and you think, if any team he goes to that creates chances, then it should be Arsenal and it should be a really good match, but we just don\u2019t know until it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n Scholes added: \u201cThe only thing I\u2019d say against Gyokeres really is that with Sporting, he\u2019s probably playing on the counter-attack a lot, in Europe especially.<\/p>\n \u201cYou think of Arsenal, they have the ball an awful lot. Now, is he going to be clever enough to make these runs in behind?<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of it that you see, he\u2019s sprinting from the halfway line almost, they can\u2019t keep up with him and he\u2019s ramming people, he\u2019s quick and he\u2019s smashing the ball in.<\/p>\n \u201cIs he going to be that clever striker? We know Isak can do that, don\u2019t we? Can Gyokeres do that?\u201d<\/p>\n Fellow host Liverpool legend Jamie\u00a0Carragher said on Gyokeres: \u201cWhat I thought was really interesting, was James McNicholas from The Athletic did a piece when the signing was done, and he insinuated in the column that he wrote that he was more of a sporting director signing.<\/p>\n \u201cThe club were in for Sesko for probably six months, and the new sporting director [changed direction] \u2013 I thought it was an interesting piece, as well as how that will affect Arteta going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n MORE ON ARSENAL ON F365 But Arsenal legend Ian Wright has brushed off concerns over Gyokeres\u2019 lack of experience in a top league and is ready to back the Gunners\u2019 new striker.<\/p>\n
