DANVERS, Mass. \u2014 The Massachusetts State Police trooper who died following a wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield<\/a> early Wednesday morning is being remembered as a hero. <\/p>\n

Governor Maura Healey and Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble identified the fallen trooper as Kevin Trainor during a late-morning news conference<\/a> at the state police barracks in Danvers.<\/p>\n

Trainor, 30, was wrapping up his shift around 2:00 a.m. when he heard the call for a wrong-way driver on Route 1 and immediately responded to assist, Massachusetts State Police leaders and Healey said Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Trainor\u2019s cruiser was then struck moments later by a Jeep traveling south on the northbound side of the highway. Trainor was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he succumbed to his injuries. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Noble said Wednesday that Trainor \u201cepitomized what it means to be a public servant\u201d in the state. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the guy you wanted as your backup,\u201d Noble added. <\/p>\n

Trainor graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2023 after previously serving as a corrections officer. Since joining the force in 2023, Trainor served as a mentor for new troopers and earned a place in MSP\u2019s Troop Community Action Team. <\/p>\n

Healey praised Trainor and expressed that Trainor\u2019s actions almost certainly prevented further tragedy. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrooper Trainor died a hero and not for his actions, and there would be a lot of grieving families today,\u201d Healey said. <\/p>\n

Trainor leaves behind several siblings, his fianc\u00e9e Jessica, and his mother, Barbara. <\/p>\n

\u201cMake no mistake: Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning. His courage, his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and put his life on the line, prevented an even greater tragedy. He will be remembered as a hero.\u201d Noble said. <\/p>\n

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. A 25 Investigates source<\/a> said a crash report listed the driver as a 50-year-old Hernan Ramon Marrero of Framingham.<\/p>\n

Route 1 northbound at Walnut Street in Saugus was closed for hours, leaving morning commuters on the North Shore stuck in gridlock traffic. The highway reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

The Essex County District Attorney\u2019s Office is continuing to investigate the crash. <\/p>\n
