Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman was \u201cclose\u201d to appearing on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in December before the firing and arrest of former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore<\/a> derailed plans, according to comedian Shane Gillis.<\/p>\n

During a Tuesday appearance on the \u201cBussin\u2019 With The Boys\u201d podcast<\/a>, Gillis, a diehard Fighting Irish fan, explained that he was behind nearly securing Freeman for the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d sketch during the Dec. 13 episode but plans fell through when the Moore scandal dominated headlines three days prior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to get him on\u00a0\u2018SNL\u2019\u00a0this year,\u201d\u00a0Gillis said. \u201cAnd it was close. We were close to getting it done. I was talking to [\u2018SNL\u2019 creator] Lorne [Michaels] about it, and we were close. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe were going to have him on \u2018Weekend Update,\u2019 and then something happened at the Michigan program that became the biggest story in college football, and not Notre Dame, so we couldn\u2019t do it. For real. It was that week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan fired 40-year-old Moore with cause on Dec. 10 for engaging in an \u201cinappropriate\u201d relationship with his executive assistant Paige Shiver \u2014 and he was arrested\u00a0by Pittsfield police<\/a>\u00a0later that day for an alleged assault after entering her apartment and threatening to kill himself with butter knives. <\/p>\n

Moore, who was\u00a0charged with<\/a>\u00a0felony home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering, was\u00a0sentenced to 18 months of probation\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n

He pleaded no contest to trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

A felony home invasion charge was dropped as\u00a0part of a plea deal.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old Shiver claimed to ABC News<\/a> that Moore manipulated her during their nearly four-year relationship, which she characterized as an \u201copen secret\u201d within the athletics department.<\/p>\n
