Apple\u2019s incoming CEO John Ternus, in a recent interview<\/a>, shared how he and Apple think about approaching AI. And ahead of what\u2019s rumored to be a big AI release with iOS 27<\/a>, he said exactly what I was hoping to hear.<\/p>\n

John Ternus explains how Apple thinks about AI<\/p>\n

In April John Ternus was interviewed<\/a> alongside Greg Joswiak by Mark Spoonauer at Tom\u2019s Guide.<\/p>\n

The interview came just ahead of Apple\u2019s announcement that Ternus will be the company\u2019s next CEO.<\/p>\n

Its timing, and the wide-ranging nature of the interview, makes it a great temperature check for how Ternus is thinking about a variety of issues heading into the CEO role.<\/p>\n

For example, Ternus talked about Apple Vision Pro<\/a>, the company\u2019s biggest flops<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n

He also gave the following explanation for his (and Apple\u2019s) approach to AI:<\/p>\n

We never think about shipping a technology. We always think about, \u201cHow can we leverage technology to ship amazing products and features and experiences for our users?\u201d So that\u2019s how we think about AI.<\/p>\n

Apple has had its fair share of AI struggles. But this perspective from Ternus helps ease some of my concerns with major AI releases like iOS 27<\/a> around the corner.<\/p>\n

Avoiding the \u2018AI everything\u2019 pitfall in iOS 27 and beyond<\/p>\n

AI isn\u2019t going away. And as Apple\u2019s executives put it in that interview, we\u2019re very much in the \u201cearly innings\u201d of the technology.<\/p>\n

Apple Intelligence first launched in 2024 to some success, but also a fair amount of criticism that hit a tipping point when Apple delayed<\/a> its promised Siri upgrades.<\/p>\n

Since then, iOS 26 was a modest update<\/a> for AI improvements, but iOS 27 is when Apple is widely expected to up its AI game significantly.<\/p>\n

The new, overhauled Siri<\/a> will be at the center of this AI \u2019redo,\u2019 but rumors indicate<\/a> there are plenty of other AI upgrades coming too.<\/p>\n

One of my main concerns about Apple and this topic is that the company will start injecting AI into everything just to shake its lackluster AI reputation.<\/p>\n

2024\u2019s Apple Intelligence rollout felt a bit like this. And since then, Siri\u2019s delays have increased the pressure on Apple to up its AI game.<\/p>\n

But if Apple truly does keep its focus on shipping \u201camazing products and features and experiences,\u201d it should be able to avoid some of the pitfalls competitors fall prey to.<\/p>\n

Plenty of technology companies ship new tech before asking whether it actually improves the user experience. I don\u2019t want Apple falling into that trap.<\/p>\n

Ideally, as Joswiak said in the interview, users don\u2019t even need to know that a feature is AI-powered. Nobody outside of Wall Street cares how many features are labeled \u2018AI.\u2019 Users just care about great products.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m hopeful that, with the help of Gemini technology<\/a>, Apple will have a bright AI future ahead. And John Ternus\u2019s comments make me optimistic he won\u2019t fall into the \u2018AI everything\u2019 trap.<\/p>\n
