But his pontificate has witnessed an historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/06\/politics\/pope-leo-rubio-meeting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">period of tension<\/a> between the White House and the Vatican, with the Augustinian friar taking office just a few months after President Donald Trump\u2019s re-election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcsgzy00093b6rcohns8t8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those who know the pope well say he remains the same person despite the monumental changes of the last 365 days. \u201cWe don\u2019t see great differences,\u201d Rev. Joseph Farrell, prior general of the Augustinian Order and friend of the pope, told CNN. \u201cIt still is a bit unbelievable to see him (as pope) and yet it makes so much sense. As one of our friars said to me: \u2018it looks like he went to pope school.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcsgzy000a3b6r57epzxwz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Leo still has his sense of humor. Another friend and Augustinian friar, Rev. Tom McCarthy, said that after his election he gave Leo  a hug, but asked afterward if he should have done that. \u201cThey were about to shoot you!\u201d the pope joked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcsgzy000b3b6r4y0vv5hg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, after 12 months in office, what have we learned about the first American pope?\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gettyimages-2271129619-20260507094352238.jpg\" alt=\"Pope Leo XIV responds to questions regarding US President Donald Trump's recent statements during the flight to Algeria on April 13, 2026 in Algiers, Algeria.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcsjm1000e3b6re0sx9i63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leo XIV\u2019s style is measured and deliberate and, as a mathematician, he takes a process-oriented approach to solving problems. He is also more formal in dress and style than his predecessor Pope Francis, who was more of a disruptor willing to break with protocol.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000i3b6rllrwf3hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Leo does follow Francis when it comes to speaking out on immigration, the environment, poverty and capital punishment. His years in Peru serving among some of its poorest communities have given him a strong sense of social justice. He\u2019s described the treatment of immigrants in the US as \u201cinhuman,\u201d while recently calling for the abolition of the death penalty.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovehcjy002o3b6r38ffdbik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPope Leo XIV has managed to ensure that his voice and actions are heard and seen with particular force by not backing down on his call for world peace, his support for migrants, and his appeal against the use of nuclear weapons,\u201d Paola Ugaz, an investigative journalist from Peru who knows the pope well, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000j3b6rjilxxca2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Iran war, though, is where the pope has spoken most forcefully, taking the unusual decision to name Trump, and denounce any religious justification of conflict. The pope\u2019s speeches during his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/22\/africa\/african-catholics-reaction-leos-first-visit-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent trip to Africa<\/a> were bold, with Leo saying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/17\/africa\/pope-leo-cameroon-mass-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cameroon<\/a> that the world is being \u201cravaged by a handful of tyrants\u201d and railing against corruption.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026-04-16t113110z-828592645-rc2bqka5rka1-rtrmadp-3-pope-africa-bamenda.JPG\" alt=\"Leo gives a speech criticizing world leaders for what he described as spending billions on \" killing=\"\" and=\"\" devastation=\"\" at=\"\" a=\"\" meeting=\"\" in=\"\" st.=\"\" joseph=\"\" cathedral=\"\" bamenda=\"\" cameroon=\"\" on=\"\" april=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000k3b6r2lnc0xe1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe only thing that I\u2019ve noticed that has been heavy upon him is the tragedy of war, and the suffering that people go through,\u201d Farrell said. \u201cHis response has been very clear\u2026 that the way towards resolution, of finding solutions, is not with arms, it\u2019s not with weapons, it\u2019s to be disarmed, and disarming, and to dialog.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000l3b6rdyl64x71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leo\u2019s forthright moves have sparked an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/17\/politics\/the-dangers-of-the-trump-administration-using-faith-to-justify-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unprecedented clash<\/a> between a US-born pope and US president. And yet in the face of an extraordinary barrage of attacks, Leo appears to have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/17\/americas\/trump-pope-us-vatican-iran-war-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unfazed<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000m3b6r15s8hnp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago told CNN that\u2019s because the pontiff \u201cdoesn\u2019t see himself as a rival to any head of state\u201d and instead his mission is to bring \u201ca unique perspective, beyond any given nation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu103000n3b6rdvlypxik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cupich said Trump\u2019s criticisms won\u2019t have bothered Leo as \u201cfrustration and being perturbed are luxuries he can\u2019t afford.\u201d Instead, the cardinal explained that the pope is \u201cgoing to do what\u2019s right\u201d and is \u201cnot going to hedge his bets.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2025-06-11t104623z-1481833829-rc2a0fazfaez-rtrmadp-3-pope-leo-audience.JPG\" alt=\"Pope Leo XIV wears a Chicago White Sox cap as he poses for a picture with people on the day of his general audience in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican June 11, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcu310000p3b6rvm8dle1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The last 12 months have bought a distinctly US-vibe to the Vatican, from the pope wearing a White Sox baseball cap to receiving pumpkin pies mid-flight during his first foreign visit over Thanksgiving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcx11d000t3b6rx424f0an@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the popemobile in St. Peter\u2019s square, he\u2019s been known to banter about baseball results (he\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/12\/style\/pope-white-sox-baseball-cap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passionate White Sox fan<\/a>) and accept a slice of deep-dish pizza or his favorite candy (Peeps).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcx11d000u3b6rl54psq0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another novelty is a pope who speaks English as a mother tongue, something not seen for centuries. However, Cupich insists Leo is also continuing the work of the Second Vatican Council, the 1962-65 gathering of bishops, which laid out a blueprint for the contemporary Church.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcyult00103b6rgaaf2juc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Francis famously stated \u201cwho am I to judge\u201d when it came to gay priests, while Leo has also subtly reframed questions about sexuality.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcyult00113b6rd190ceqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe tend to think that when the Church is talking about morality, that the only issue of morality is sexual,\u201d he said last month. \u201cAnd in reality, I believe there are much greater, more important issues, such as justice, equality, freedom of men and women, freedom of religion, that would all take priority before that particular issue.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcyult00123b6rq10eb9i9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the pope has indicated he won\u2019t make major changes, he is adopting a step-by-step approach, appointing women to senior Vatican positions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoveez4s002j3b6rmjifva83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLeo XIV\u2019s style is measured, with few but necessary words, and when he makes a decision, there is no going back,\u201d Ugaz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcyult00133b6r7teqy5i5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And on the clerical sexual abuse scandal, he has met regularly with survivors while insisting that there can be \u201cno tolerance for any form of abuse in the Church.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2025-10-08t075007z-274721469-rc2j7hauwimf-rtrmadp-3-pope-audience.JPG\" alt=\"Faithful use their mobile phones as Pope Leo XIV arrives for a general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, on October 8.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovcywe500153b6r9qxkl2l9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s very tech savvy,\u201d is how McCarthy puts it. Leo is the first pontiff to be comfortable using a smart phone, wearing an Apple watch and writing his own emails. John Prevost, one of the pope\u2019s brothers, recently told CNN\u2019s Erin Burnett that Leo talked him through how to get back into his new computer when he was \u201clocked out.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd1be700193b6rllwgc4kj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He was also seen recently in Africa advising the Vatican photographer on how to compose a shot and has previously helped cardinals and bishops get in position for photos. He\u2019s also very aware of the media and is conscious of what\u2019s being reported, once joking with journalists, \u201cyou think you can read my mind or face. You are not always correct.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd1dzk001b3b6r8ox7buij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, his first encyclical, a formal letter he sends to the world\u2019s bishops, is expected to focus on artificial intelligence, a topic he has spoken about several times.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gettyimages-2237836741-20260507094704200.jpg\" alt=\"Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, center, walks in the first Reflection Procession through Washington, DC, on September 28, 2025, in observance of the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd246x001d3b6rfbu5lbu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the surest ways a pope can influence the Church and its engagement in politics is through the appointment of bishops, with Leo making a series of influential picks for the US church during his first year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd4ub9001h3b6rejizsmcr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In New York, he chose Archbishop Ronald Hicks, a fellow Chicagoan who spent time in Latin America, and Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, an El Salvador\u2013born advocate for immigrants as the next bishop for Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia. Menjivar-Ayala, who crossed illegally into the US hidden in the trunk of a car in 1990, has criticized the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd4xs9001j3b6r3y71g87y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, three of Leo\u2019s first four US bishop appointments were born outside the country. That includes Bishop Michael Pham to San Diego, who came to America as child refugee from Vietnam. His own Augustinian religious order has also reported a boost from young men wanting to join, which some are calling the \u201cLeo effect.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd88qt001p3b6rmkt7l6o0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A US-born pope has an opportunity to connect with a new generation who seem open to exploring questions of faith, particularly after the Covid-19 lockdowns which restricted worship, and in a time of increased uncertainty.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovd8eat001r3b6rwqxetn9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At 70, Leo is younger than his immediate predecessors and, as such, can afford to play the long game. His first year has been one of adjustment, centered on establishing himself in the role and turning his American roots into assets, along with his time in Latin America.
