{"id":631694,"date":"2026-05-08T22:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T22:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/631694\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T22:16:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T22:16:10","slug":"nysdec-illegal-monkey-kept-as-pet-on-grand-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/631694\/","title":{"rendered":"NYSDEC: Illegal monkey kept as pet on Grand Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York&#8217;s DEC seized a spider monkey kept illegally as a pet on Grand Island, later found to suffer from a broken wrist and rickets<\/p>\n<p>GRAND ISLAND, NY \u2014 New York&#8217;s Department of Environmental Conservation is releasing new details about the seizure of a monkey, which was being kept illegally as a pet on Grand Island.<\/p>\n<p>According to officials, Investigators with the Bureau of Environmental Crimes were called to a home on the island on April 14th for reports that someone was keeping a spider monkey as a pet. There, they found the animal and its owner, who acknowledged she could no longer care for the animal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The owner gave the monkey over to investigators, who then brought the animal to a local licensed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgrz.com\/article\/life\/animals\/primate-sanctuary-fundraiser\/71-8db20f57-3242-486b-a19e-8f4726a100b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">primate sanctuary<\/a>.
