Although he\u2019s been flirting around with live-action again in recent years\u2014to the tune of three Oscar wins, and a boatload of nominations, for last year\u2019s Frankenstein<\/a>\u2014Guillermo Del Toro has never been shy about his love of animation<\/a>, and specifically stop-motion animation. This week, he opened up about his latest project in the form, an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro\u2019s 2015 novel The Buried Giant, calling it a \u201cfascinatingly difficult stop-motion movie for adults\u201d that he\u2019s making \u201cwithout any concession to a family audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, to be fair, it\u2019s not like Del Toro\u2019s\u00a0last\u00a0stop-motion film was especially kiddy: His 2022 Pinocchio\u00a0adaptation<\/a> had some cute puppet designs, but also didn\u2019t back away from the darkness of Carlo Collodi\u2019s original novel. Even so, Del Toro\u2014who was, per\u00a0Deadline<\/a>, talking about\u00a0The Buried Giant\u00a0while picking up a lifetime achievement award from the British Film Institute this week\u2014emphasized that he expects this next project to be grueling, from both an emotional and technological point of view. (The original book is a decidedly dark fantasy, as an old couple living in a post-Arthurian world suffers from a memory loss that afflicts them and everyone they know, eventually embarking on a journey to find a son they only barely remember having.)<\/p>\n

Among other things, Del Toro emphasized why he feels animation (which he\u2019s previously said<\/a> has been \u201ckidnapped by a bunch of hoodlums\u201d in the mainstream studio system) is necessary for stories like this. \u201cIf you do a live action Pinocchio and all of a sudden a puppet walks through it becomes uncanny valley, which is a horrible thing that doesn\u2019t belong in the same world,\u201d Del Toro asserted. \u201cJust like if you do a live action movie about an old couple crossing a landscape full of trolls and fairies, and there are special effects and actors. I want all the creatures to be of the same material. It\u2019s gonna take us years. And it\u2019s incredibly difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Buried Giant\u00a0is reportedly still set up at Netflix, who are Del Toro\u2019s long-time collaborators at this point.
