New York controlled the game from the opening minutes. The Liberty pushed the pace and overwhelmed the Sun on both ends of the floor. Every run brought louder cheers from the crowd. The ball movement looked sharp and the defense looked relentless. It felt like playoff basketball in May. That atmosphere reflected how much momentum the WNBA continues to build across the country.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s appearance also carried added meaning beyond basketball. Back when he was still a mayoral candidate, he publicly backed the WNBA’s ongoing collective bargaining negotiations and signed a letter supporting the WNBPA. That support earned praise from many fans online even before opening night tipped off. Seeing him inside Barclays only added another layer to an already memorable night.

Liberty send message on WNBA opening night

The Liberty looked focused from start to finish. They played with confidence and swagger. Most importantly, they looked hungry to defend their place among the WNBA’s elite teams.

Meanwhile, opening night often brings excitement. However, this one brought something even bigger. A sold-out crowd. A major political appearance. A dominant win under the Brooklyn lights. In the end, the Liberty did not just start a season Friday night. Instead, they reminded everyone that women’s basketball in New York feels larger than ever. And honestly, who would want to miss what comes next?
