Police had responded to the location in the area of Tyler Court, near\u00a0SUNY Upstate Medical University and the I-81 viaduct, around 6 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a man was menacing people with a machete.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen we got some calls about the same individual cutting a dog with the machete,\u201d Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin said.<\/p>\n
After investigating at the scene, officers were attempting to execute a search warrant, when police say a suspect opened fire. Rusin said officers also shot back during the exchange of gunfire.<\/p>\n
Rusin said the two officers that were shot were transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical University, and the other officer, who sustained unspecified injuries, was seeking medical attention and was also in stable condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The situation remains active as authorities, and multiple law enforcement agencies have responded, including the sheriff’s office, New York State Police and the FBI.<\/p>\n
Officials said it is unclear how many suspects they are searching for at this time.<\/p>\n
Police have asked people to avoid the area at all costs and find alternate routes.<\/p>\n
“I feel totally confident that the city will be safe,\u201d Rusin said, adding, \u201cWe are again asking people to not come into this immediate area. That’s causing more problems than anything else.”<\/p>\n
