They are at hospital.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        San Luis Obispo County hospitals are graded in The Leapfrog Group\u2019s Hospital Safety Grade report for spring 2026. <\/p>\n<p>                Morsa Images<\/p>\n<p>            Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>How safe are hospitals in the San Luis Obispo County areas?<\/p>\n<p>Three local hospitals scored \u201cA\u201d grades in The Leapfrog Group\u2019s latest report.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit organization, which focuses on patient safety and care, issues <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leapfroggroup.org\/news-events\/new-leapfrog-hospital-safety-grades-show-significant-improvement-patient-safety\">Hospital Safety Grade reports<\/a> twice a year for general hospitals across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Grades are based on hospitals\u2019 ability to \u201cprotect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections,\u201d The Leapfrog Group said.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40% of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalsafetygrade.org\/your-hospitals-safety-grade\/state-rankings\">California hospitals received \u201cA\u201d grades<\/a> for patient safety in spring 2026, with a total of 113 healthcare facilities earning A\u2019s, according to the group.<\/p>\n<p>That means the Golden State ranks among the 10 safest states for hospital patients in the country, The Leapfrog Group said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is that hospitals across the country are making meaningful strides in patient safety and helping save countless lives,\u201d Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in a Thursday, May 6, news release. \u201cBut not all hospitals are the same. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important for people to &#8230; do their research when choosing a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See how hospitals in and around San Luis Obispo County fared:<\/p>\n<p>What are the safest hospitals in SLO County?<\/p>\n<p>Two hospitals in SLO County received \u201cA\u201d grades in The Leapfrog Group\u2019s spring 2026 report: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignityhealth.org\/central-coast\/locations\/frenchhospital\">French Hospital Medical Center<\/a> in San Luis Obispo and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignityhealth.org\/central-coast\/locations\/arroyo-grande?utm_source=Horizon&amp;utm_medium=GoogleSearch&amp;utm_campaign=156942844010&amp;utm_content=697971515517&amp;cmp=FYAO_HMI_SRCH_CSH_CARG_CACC_SANL_AGCH_HOSP_NSP_-ArroyoGrande&amp;ef_id=Cj0KCQjw8PDPBhCeARIsAOJwmWXq_8D1zbUqIoaHx_t_MQsatLgdx9X-jOH_uMkxmMbd0rFeg1Nu9BgaApAmEALw_wcB%3AG%3As&amp;s_kwcid=AL%2112184%213%21697971515517%21p%21%21g%21%21hospital+arroyo+grande%2121247526374%21156942844010&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21247526374&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA9kme8d7eyAVMcixTh1cixsi9aFKf&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw8PDPBhCeARIsAOJwmWXq_8D1zbUqIoaHx_t_MQsatLgdx9X-jOH_uMkxmMbd0rFeg1Nu9BgaApAmEALw_wcB\">Arroyo Grande Community Hospita<\/a>l.<\/p>\n<p>Both hospitals received perfect scores for their <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalsafetygrade.org\/h\/french-hospital-medical-center\">practices to prevent errors<\/a>, including handwashing, safely administering medication and communication with patients being discharged.<\/p>\n<p>The hospitals scored average or above average in terms of efforts to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalsafetygrade.org\/h\/arroyo-grande-community-hospital\">prevent infections and safety problems<\/a>, as well as communication between doctors, nurses and staff.<\/p>\n<p>French Hospital, 1911 Johnson Ave in San Luis Obispo, scored below average when it came to preventing problems with surgery such as wounds splitting open, blood leaks and kidney injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Arroyo Grande Community Hospital also received a low score for surgical safety, with issues including dangerous objects left in a patient\u2019s body and death from serious treatable complications.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital at 345 South Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande also scored low for specially trained doctors for intensive care unit patients.<\/p>\n<p>Both hospitals are part of the<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/aclk?sa=L&amp;ai=DChsSEwjlq_-cnaiUAxWYG0QIHbWQBFoYACICCAEQABoCZHo&amp;ae=2&amp;aspm=1&amp;co=1&amp;ase=2&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw8PDPBhCeARIsAOJwmWWC5_5_bGzgmSrsg7BewBSqH9ytT5olMULsD_nvtnb9ey4DeXRbP6UaAvJqEALw_wcB&amp;cid=CAASWuRouj3vC8p61c_9zuzCYUGjhBw9r44-SU1WS4Ih0Y2o2p6tTpgNM3ZPNHoAACmPpOiyQ1vqJ0SAUIkvjyb9cBdDE6zfivNnF2W1EM6GLu7BHjb3Ep8D0qcnog&amp;cce=2&amp;category=acrcp_v1_35&amp;sig=AOD64_1oVB7ILnof3rfH1vHrB-PAnBvd_g&amp;q&amp;nis=4&amp;adurl&amp;ved=2ahUKEwir1vqcnaiUAxUkJkQIHVD6AtAQ0Qx6BAgMEAE\"> Dignity Health<\/a> healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>The Leapfrog Group considers French Hospital a \u201cStraight A\u201d hospital, since it has been awarded that grade for 29 consecutive reports. Only one other hospital in California has achieved that honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it signifies more than just a grade,\u201d Sue Andersen, president and CEO at French Hospital Medical Center, said in a news release on Wednesday, May 6. \u201cIt\u2019s a profound validation that our community can truly trust French Hospital to provide the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignityhealth.org\/central-coast\/locations\/frenchhospital\/about-us\/press-center\/french-hospital-medical-center-establishes-elite-national-status-in-patient-safety\">safest and highest quality healthcare<\/a>,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the safest hospital in Santa Maria?<\/p>\n<p>Marian Regional Medical Center, 1400 East Church St. in Santa Maria, also received an A grade for patient safety in The Leapfrog Group\u2019s spring 2026 report.<\/p>\n<p>The Dignity Health hospital came close to a perfect score for its work to prevent safety problems, and its practices to prevent errors were all above average.<\/p>\n<p>However, Marian Regional Medical Center faltered in terms of its efforts to prevent certain infections and surgical problems.<\/p>\n<p>Which local hospitals got C grades for hospital safety?<\/p>\n<p>Both <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adventisthealth.org\/\">Adventist Health hospitals<\/a> in SLO County got \u201cC\u201d grades for patient safety in spring 2026, The Leapfrog Group said.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adventisthealth.org\/central-coast\/\">Adventist Health Sierra Vista<\/a>, 1010 Murray Ave. in San Luis Obispo, received <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalsafetygrade.org\/h\/adventist-health-sierra-vista?findBy=zip&amp;zip_code=93401&amp;radius=50&amp;rPos=511.0447692871094&amp;rSort=distance\">below-average scores<\/a> in parts of four categories: infections, problems with surgery, safety problems and doctors, nurses and hospital staff.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the hospital performed worse than average in terms of surgical wounds splitting open, death from serious treatable complications and accidental cuts and tears.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adventisthealth.org\/central-coast\/locations\/twin-cities-community-hospital\/\">Adventist Health Twin Cities<\/a>, 1100 Las Tablas Road in Templeton, received average or above scores for its work to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalsafetygrade.org\/h\/adventist-health-twin-cities?findBy=zip&amp;zip_code=93401&amp;radius=50&amp;rPos=701.3333129882812&amp;rSort=distance\">prevent surgical problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the hospital failed to sufficiently prevent issues including dangerous blood clots, urinary tract infections and falls causing broken hips.<\/p>\n<p>It also scored poorly for handwashing, communication about medications and communication with doctors and nurses.<\/p>\n<p>Adventist Health released a press statement on Wednesday, May 6, congratulating its Central California hospitals that received an A grade but failed to mention the low grades for the two hospitals in SLO County.<\/p>\n<p>How did SLO County hospitals rank in the past?<\/p>\n<p>According to The Leapfrog Group, French Hospital Medical Center has consistently received A grades for patient safety since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>From fall 2023 to spring 2026, Marian Regional Medical Center earned perfect patient safety grades as well.
