Matthew McConaughey, 55, almost landed the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron\u2019s 1997 film\u00a0\u201cTitanic,\u201d<\/a> but lost out due to his Southern drawl.<\/p>\n In a new posthumous memoir, \u201cThe Bigger Picture\u201d by Jon Landau, the late producer detailed the casting in depth. <\/p>\n Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose Dewitt Bukater in the 1997 hit movie \u201cTitanic.\u201d \u00a920thCentFox\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/p>\n According to a snippet obtained by\u00a0Matthew Belloni\u2019s What I\u2019m Hearing<\/a>\u00a0newsletter, Kate Winslet, who was already cast as Rose, \u201cwas\u00a0taken with Matthew, his presence and charm.\u201d<\/p>\n Cameron, 70, meanwhile, wasn\u2019t having it.\u00a0 <\/p>\n The filmmaker told McConaughey, per Landau\u2019s book, \u201cThat\u2019s great, now let\u2019s try it a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe Bigger Picture\u201d is a memoir by Jon Landau. Penguin Random House<\/p>\n McConaughey, who was born and raised in Texas, allegedly quipped back, \u201cNo. That was pretty good. Getty Images for Jacquemus<\/p>\n In 2021, McConaughey opened up about his audition while on the \u201cLiterally! with Rob Lowe\u201d<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n \u201cSo I went and read with Kate Winslet, and it was not one of the auditions,\u201d he said \u201cThey filmed it so it was like into screen test time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAfter we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me, and when we got outside, they were like, \u2018That went great.\u2019 I mean, kind of, like, hugs. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n The \u201cDazed and Confused\u201d star also set the record straight on rumors that he was offered the part.<\/p>\n \u201cI asked Cameron about this, because the gossip over the years that I heard and would see written about me was that I had the role in\u00a0\u2018Titanic\u2019\u00a0and turned it down,\u201d McConaughey recounted. \u201cNot factual. I did not get offered that role.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFor a while, I was saying, \u2018I gotta find that agent. When it\u2019s on, my phone blows up because everyone\u2019s [sending]. I have more photos of flat screen TVs in nondescript\u00a0rooms.
