Ahead of his new documentary, Marty, Life Is Short, Martin Short<\/a> reflected on his \u201cstaggering\u201d past four months of personal loss. Short gave his first interview since his daughter Katherine died by suicide to CBS Sunday Mornings. \u201cIt\u2019s been a nightmare for the family,\u201d he said of his daughter\u2019s death. \u201cMental health and cancer, like my wife, are both diseases \u2014 and sometimes with diseases, they are terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n Reflecting on his daughter\u2019s death, Short reiterated the belief that mental illness is a disease, one that can turn fatal. \u201cMy daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could, until she couldn\u2019t,\u201d Short said. \u201cSo Nan\u2019s last words to me were, \u2018Mart, let me go.\u2019 And she was just saying, \u2018Dad, let me go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Short\u2019s daughter Katherine died in February, just the latest in a long list of loss for Short. The documentary covers his early life, marked by the passing of both his parents before he turned 20 and the death of his brother when he was a child. Short\u2019s wife Nancy died of ovarian cancer in 2010. \u201cAnd suddenly, last October, I lost Diane Keaton<\/a> on the same day I lost my sister-in-law, Nancy\u2019s sister, to cancer,\u201d Short told CBS. \u201cThen Rob and Michelle [Reiner]<\/a> have been my lifelong friends for 40 years \u2026 And then Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/a> and then my daughter. I mean, it\u2019s been in four months.
