ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) \u2014 Police have given the all-clear after a swatting call prompted a lockdown at Norcross High School on Monday, according to the school\u2019s principal.<\/p>\n
The school went on lockdown after the Norcross Police Department alerted the school to a threat Monday morning, Principal Will Bishop wrote in a letter to parents after the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, the campus was immediately placed on a hard lockdown while police responded and began a thorough investigation,\u201d Bishop wrote.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Norcross police told Atlanta News First\u2019s sister station Telemundo that they received a call Monday morning \u201cregarding the possible presence of an armed person\u201d on the campus.<\/p>\n
After investigating the reported threat, police \u201cdetermined this incident to be a case of swatting,\u201d Bishop wrote in his letter.<\/p>\n
\u201cSwatting\u201d is when someone calls law enforcement with false reports, trying to prompt a large police response.<\/p>\n
Norcross High School has returned to normal operations. Gwinnett County Public Schools police are working with state and federal authorities to find out who made the swatting call.<\/p>\n
Bishop wrote the Monday incident was \u201csimilar to what occurred at another Gwinnett County Public Schools campus last week.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand the concern and anxiety this situation may cause for our school community, and we want to reassure you that the safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority,\u201d Bishop said in another letter to parents before the lockdown was lifted. <\/p>\n
Spalding Drive in front of the school was closed to traffic as police responded, and drivers were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes. <\/p>\n
