I won\u2019t bore you with those details, but let\u2019s just say it worked out,\u201d the former NFL superstar-turned-Fox Sports personality said before introducing Fox CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/lachlan-murdoch\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lachlan-murdoch\" data-tag=\"lachlan-murdoch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lachlan Murdoch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMurdoch then gave the Fox corporate pitch: \u201cWe don\u2019t try to do everything, and we don\u2019t pursue scale just for scale sake. Instead, we focus where it matters most, live sports, live news, bold entertainment and ad supported streaming,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we said at last year\u2019s upfront, Fox continues to be an outlier in the marketplace. In fact, for the third year in a row, Fox is the only major media company consistently growing audiences a direct result of our discipline strategy and a relentless focus on building true fandom around the content audiences genuinely connect with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMurdoch handed off to ad sales chief Jeff Collins, who continued the pitch, and then Fox chief technology officer Melody Hildebrandt kept up the wonky conversation \u2014 and new features like an AI Colin Cowherd, providing sports punditry to users\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTubi CEO Anjali Sud followed that up with an update on the free ad-supported streamer, touting its status as the No. 1 fully free, ad supported streamer, according to Nielsen, with 100 million monthly active users watching over 10 billion hours a year. \u201cContrary to what you might think, these are high value audiences, Tubi ranks fourth in reaching high income ad supported viewers, ahead of Disney+ and Paramount,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen it comes to total ad supported reach, Tubi is one of the largest platforms in America, ahead of other streamers like Netflix and Peacock, and outperforming all broadcasts and cable in minutes watched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSud also highlighted Tubi\u2019s further push into original programming \u2014 including a new series timed to this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/world-cup\/\" id=\"auto-tag_world-cup\" data-tag=\"world-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a>, hosted by NY Giants quarterback Jameis Winston and former NFL player Rob Gronkowski. Dubbed \u201cThe Other Football,\u201d the duo discuss issues like, as Gronk wondered, \u00a0\u201cHow come the World Cup isn\u2019t a cup?\u201d Gronk ended his segment by spiking a soccer ball from the stage \u2014 continuing a long-standing Fox upfront tradition of sports stars and hosts lobbing balls into the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the scripted front, Jerry O\u2019Connell, Violet McGraw, Sophia Bush came out to tout their Tubi YA feature \u201cSummer\u2019s Last Resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/baywatch\/\" id=\"auto-tag_baywatch\" data-tag=\"baywatch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baywatch<\/a>,\u201d of course, led the Fox Entertainment portion of the upfront, with the revival\u2019s cast \u2014 led by Stephen Amell \u2014 on stage (but not in their swimsuits). \u201c\u2019Baywatch\u2019 is the quintessential Southern California escape,\u201d Amell said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been busy filming on famed Venice Beach, and we are back on set, tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThen came the first trailer from the return of \u201cBaywatch\u201d \u2013 complete with slo-mo shots of the lifeguards grabbing their paddle boards and prancing toward the ocean, ready to save some lives. (Yes, those shots got some knowing chuckles from the media buyers in the audience.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cCan you imagine the budget for waxing and hair removal?\u201d said \u201cAnimal Control\u201d star Joel McHale as he and \u201cGrimsburg\u201d creator and star Jon Hamm walked on stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMore of like \u2018Babe watch,\u2019 \u201d Hamm said. \u201cThank you. That\u2019s the first time that joke\u2019s been made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter that, the casts of Fox\u2019s \u201cBest Medicine,\u201d \u201cMemory of a Killer\u201d and \u201cDoc\u201d came out to promote the network\u2019s hour-long slate. And Stephen Fry and Jenna Elfman, the star of Fox\u2019s new drama \u201cThe Interrogator,\u201d followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFry then introduced fellow Brit Gordon Ramsay and \u201can actual American jackass,\u201d \u201cFear Factor\u201d host Johnny Knoxville. \u201cIt\u2019s great to be up here with the GOAT \u2014 most hours on network primetime, world renowned chef with 17 Michelin stars and biggest influencer in the world,\u201d Knoxville said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRamsay returned the compliment: \u201c\u2019Fear Factor\u2019 debuted to 17 million views,\u201d he said. \u201cCome on, insane. That tells me one thing, people really like watching other people do some stupid fucking shit, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPerhaps it was appropriate that Ramsay and Knoxville then watched and commented on scenes of pretty disgusting meals on \u201cFear Factor.\u201d And that was followed by the segment on Fox News Media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum came out to represent the news side of the brand. Baier and MacCallum noted that Fox News is now pulling broadcast-level ratings: \u201cThe Five\u201d beats \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d and \u201cThe Voice,\u201d Baier asserted, while MacCallum said Fox News is \u201caveraging 3.1 million viewers in weekday prime, even beating NBC. That\u2019s a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThen came \u201cThe Five\u201d hosts Greg Gutfeld, Jessica Tarlov and Harold Ford, Jr. and a pitch on Fox News Channel\u2019s America 250 coverage from \u201cFox &amp; Friends\u201d star Lawrence Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFinally came the closer, and what Fox would probably prefer advertisers really focus on: The Fox Sports roster, including this year\u2019s World Cup coverage. Fox Sports commentator Michael Strahan introduced the sports segment, and like \u201cThe Other Football\u201d guys, Strahan said he was on stage to talk about this football instead of the one he\u2019s known for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTrust me when I say this tournament will be what everybody\u2019s talking about all summer long, and that includes me,\u201d Strahan said. \u201cThis is the first World Cup in the US in three decades, and that is a long time. We\u2019re going to have more teams and more games than ever. All 104 matches will be streamed live in 4K so we\u2019re expecting over 15 million fans to watch each U.S. match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStrahan then broke some news, bringing out former talk show host <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/james-corden\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-corden\" data-tag=\"james-corden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Corden<\/a> to host \u201cAfter Hours With James Corden\u201d in late night after World Cup matches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be me and former England soccer Captain Rio Ferdinand and one of my favorite comedians on planet Earth, Ian Karmel,\u201d Corden said. \u201cEvery night after the games, we\u2019re going to be trying to have a lighthearted look at the World Cup, talking about the games, talking about anything that may have happened that day. And what we\u2019re going to try and do is make it feel like if you couldn\u2019t meet up with your friends in a bar that night, we\u2019ll be there to have some fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhy Fox? \u201cBecause they have the rights to the games,\u201d he told Strahan. \u201cI can\u2019t stress this enough. If they didn\u2019t have the rights to the games, I do this show on the network that did, I feel like your agreement with them is very similar. It would\u00a0be weird for you to come out talking about football on a Sunday, going, \u2018it\u2019s on over there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor baseball, Fox Sports brought out three of the biggest: Its stars David Jeter, David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez. So, Ortiz asked, can the Dodgers\u2019 Ohtani win his third straight ring? \u201cThat\u2019s my dog,\u201d he said. Jeter and Rodriguez were quiet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBack out were Brady and Gronkowski, to talk football with Erin Andrews. The trio announced Fox Sports Thanksgiving game: Philadelphia Eagles at the Dallas Cowboys. And on Nov. 1, the college basketball season tips off in Rome with Notre Dame vs. Villanova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou know what Villanova grad might be in attendance? Pope Leo!!\u201d Andrews said.
