DURHAM, N.,C. (WTVD) — A North Carolina resident is among the Americans flown to Nebraska for monitoring after being on board the cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) confirmed on Monday that one person from NC was on board the ship<\/a> and has been evacuated to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.<\/p>\n

The person’s identity is not being released.<\/p>\n

“Our public health team is among the best in the country and remains ready to respond as the situation evolves,” said Dr. Kelly Kimple, Director of NCDHHS Division of Public Health. “We are in constant communication with federal, state and local officials and are prepared to assist the individual and protect the health and well-being of all North Carolinians.”<\/p>\n

There are no confirmed hantavirus cases in North Carolina, and the risk of infection here remains extremely low.<\/p>\n

All passengers from the ship will be monitored for symptoms for 42 days after their last possible exposure.<\/p>\n

The health risk to the public is “very, very low,” government officials say.<\/p>\n
