Leroy.<\/p>\n<p>Located about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/very-large-telescope-messier-77-05020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">62 million light-years<\/a> from Earth in the constellation of Cetus, Messier 77 is one of the brightest and best-studied galaxies in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as the Squid Galaxy, NGC 1068, LEDA 10266 and Cetus A, this galaxy has an apparent magnitude of 9.6.<\/p>\n<p>Messier 77 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/hubble-barred-spiral-galaxy-messier-77-13822.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">discovered<\/a> by the French astronomer Pierre M\u00e9chain in 1780, who originally identified it as a nebula. M\u00e9chain then communicated the discovery to his colleague, French astronomer Charles Messier.<\/p>\n<p>Messier believed that the highly luminous object he saw was a cluster of stars, but as technology progressed its true status as a galaxy was realized.<\/p>\n<p>At 100,000 light-years across, Messier 77 is one of largest galaxies in the Messier catalogue \u2014 so massive that its gravity causes other nearby galaxies to twist and become warped. It is also one of the closest galaxies with an active galactic nucleus (AGN).<\/p>\n<p>Messier 77 is also classified as a Type II Seyfert galaxy, characterized by being particularly bright at infrared wavelengths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the heart of Messier 77 is a compact region filled with hot gas that handily outshines the rest of the galaxy put together, even overcoming the light-gathering capacity of Webb\u2019s cameras,\u201d the Webb astronomers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an AGN, and it\u2019s powered by M77\u2019s central supermassive black hole, which is eight million times as massive as our Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas in the galaxy\u2019s central regions is pulled by the strong gravity into a tight and rapid orbit around the black hole, where it crashes together and heats up, releasing tremendous amounts of radiation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge13\/image_14754_2e-Messier-77.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109651\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-109651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image_14754_2-Messier-77.jpg\" alt=\"This image of Messier 77 was captured by Webb\u2019s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).
