Holger Rune has pressed paused on his comeback.

Former world No. 4 Rune has withdrawn from his planned comeback tournament in Hamburg and this month’s Roland Garros nursing a knee injury. Rune joins two-time Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz in pulling out of Paris. Alcaraz will not defend his Roland Garros title as he continues his recovery from a right wrist injury.

On October 19th, Rune was leading Ugo Humbert 6-4, 2-2 when he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinals. A tearful Rune retired from the match and underwent surgery last October. Rune has made a rapid recovery from surgery, but suffered a knee issue while training for his comeback.

“I was really looking forward to coming back to Hamburg, and you all know how much I love clay and how special Paris and Roland Garros have always been to me,” said Rune. “This decision was therefore not easy to make. But for me, it’s not just about being able to play a few games, it’s about being ready for a whole tournament. I don’t want to come back feeling almost ready, but 110% ready when I get back on the court. I can’t wait to come back for the grass season.”

In March, Rune told Tales From Tennis podcast he’s excited to return and challenge world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

“I know I can compete one-on-one with Sinner and Alcaraz, and every time I go out on court against them, I know I have a chance to beat them,” said Rune, who is 2-3 lifetime vs. Sinner and has split four meetings vs. world No. 1 Alcaraz. “I know they both feel uncomfortable when they play against me and that gives me extra motivation.”

By Richard Pagliaro | Monday, May 11, 2026Photo credit: Tony Chang/Chang Photography Holger Rune has pressed paused on…

[72
99,428
post-639738","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
