Mexico\u2019s government and the CIA have rebutted a report\u00a0claiming\u00a0that\u00a0US intelligence\u00a0agents\u00a0have\u00a0participated\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0targeted assassinations of alleged drug cartel members in the\u00a0Latin\u00a0American country.<\/p>\n
The denials on Tuesday came after CNN reported that the CIA has been deeply involved in deadly operations aimed at dismantling Mexico\u2019s drug cartels.<\/p>\n

CIA operatives have \u201cdirectly participated\u201d in several attacks on drug trafficking syndicates since last year, including a car explosion in March that killed Francisco Beltran, an alleged member of the Sinaloa Cartel, CNN reported, citing multiple unnamed sources.<\/p>\n
The operations have mostly targeted mid-level cartel members, with the CIA\u2019s involvement ranging from \u201cpassive intelligence sharing\u201d to \u201cdirect participation in assassination operations\u201d, CNN reported.<\/p>\n
In a social media post, CIA spokesperson Liz Lyons said the CNN report was \u201cfalse and salacious\u201d and \u201cserves as nothing more than a PR campaign for the cartels and puts American lives at risk\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mexico\u2019s Secretary of Security Omar Garcia Harfuch also challenged the report, saying the government \u201ccategorically rejects any version that seeks to normalise, justify, or suggest the existence of lethal, covert, or unilateral operations by foreign agencies on national territory\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cCooperation with the United States exists, is important, and has yielded relevant results for both countries,\u201d Harfuch said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, it is carried out under clear principles: respect for sovereignty, shared responsibility, mutual trust, and cooperation without subordination.\u201d<\/p>\n
CNN did not\u00a0immediately\u00a0respond to a request for comment about the Mexican government and the CIA\u2019s rebuttals.<\/p>\n
