Former Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy is looking for his next job, but it might not be with the Edmonton Oilers.

The Vegas Golden Knights fired Cassidy with just eight games left in the season in a stunning move, as he had one year left on his deal. Although Vegas fired Cassidy, because they owe him money, NHL teams have to request permission from the Golden Knights to interview him.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli of Hockey247 revealed the Oilers requested permission, but Vegas has withheld permission from their division rival, speaking to him.

“The Edmonton Oilers have sought permission to interview Bruce Cassidy as they contemplate significant changes to their coaching staff,” Seravalli wrote in an article published on Tuesday. “To this point, the Vegas Golden Knights have withheld permission from their division rival, multiple league sources told Hockey 24/7 …

“Sources said Vegas had not outright denied permission for Edmonton to interview Cassidy, but had more so kept the Oilers waiting as they continue playing their second-round series against Anaheim. Cassidy is also a target of the Los Angeles Kings’ vacancy.”

Edmonton has yet to fire head coach Kris Knoblauch, which could play a factor in why Vegas hasn’t approved the request, as there is no vacancy. But, it could also be some gamesmanship with their division rival.

Cassidy served as the Bruins’ head coach from 2016 until 2022and reached the playoffs every year. He went 245-108-46 as the Bruins head coach. In his first year as the Golden Knights’ head coach, he led Vegas to a Stanley Cup.

Cassidy is 470-254-9-96 all-time as an NHL head coach.
