It measured 48.5 inches in length with a girth of 36.75 inches.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Hodge&#8217;s <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">historic<\/a> fish broke the previous record set in 2015, when an angler caught a 69.5-pound blue catfish in the Choctawhatchee River in Washington County.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/beaver-tests-positive-rabies-after-attacking-several-people-new-jersey-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WATCH: RABID BEAVER FOUGHT data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/blue-catfish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NOAA<\/a>, the freshwater fish is native to the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/Mississippi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mississippi<\/a>, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Missouri<\/a> and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ohio<\/a> River basins, and has been stocked for fishing in nearly 20 states.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Suwannee River, where the record cat was apprehended, is a more than 200-mile-long blackwater river that runs through south <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Georgia<\/a> southward into Florida.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" suspect might be a record fish \u2013 the path to the record books is a meticulous one.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When a potential record fish is caught, anglers arrange with the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_11\" href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Florida Wildlife Commission<\/a> to have an employee witness the official weigh, on a certified scale and take measurements.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/blue-catfish-face.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">According to the NOAA, many anglers like fishing for blue catfish because they are strong, savvy fish that are a good challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (NOAA)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">For any fish other than a largemouth bass, a FWC fisheries biologist must certify the species by physically witnessing and inspecting the fish.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">With the record officially verified by a biologist, Hodge\u2019s massive blue catfish now stands atop the leader board as the largest of its kind ever caught in the Sunshine State.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_12\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/cocaine-real-impact-wildlife-sharks-salmon-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">COCAINE POLLUTION HAS SHARKS AND SALMON OFF THE RAILS \u2014 AND IT&#8217;S NOT THEIR FAULT<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Blue catfish are not only prized for their size, but also valued as a flavorful and nutritious catch, in addition to being a strong, savvy fish that puts up a good fight.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Whether Hodge chose to mount his record-breaking fish or serve it at the table remains unknown, but one thing is
